"From Here To Ear": Rock Birds by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot

   "Céleste Boursier-Mougenot started his career as a musician... In the early 1990s, he decided to make his music independent by creating installations in places dedicated to contemporary art. By extracting the "musical potential" of various situations and objects, he creates installations where sound and movement merge and that are meant to be using the entire exhibition space, depending on its location, its architecture and its environment. For the artist, these mechanisms and "their installations" are the necessary conditions for the emergence of works of art that live in the present and evolve through their surroundings..."

   "From here to ear" -which started almost 15 years ago and is nowadays presented  in its 16th version - is an inteactive art installation composed of an aviary where 14 electric guitars are installed horizontally and in which the visitor is invited to enter in order to experience the work and consort with the "actors": birds, whose activity generate a musical composition ephemeral and constantly reinvented.      Το "Από εδώ στο αυτί" -που ξεκίνησε σχεδόν πριν από 15 χρόνια και σήμερα πλέον παρουσιάζεται στην 16η εκδοχή της - είναι μια διαδραστική καλλιτεχνική εγκατάσταση που αποτελείται από ένα "πτηνοτροφείο", όπου 14 ηλεκτρικές κιθάρες έχουν τοποθετηθεί οριζόντια και στο οποίο ο επισκέπτης καλείται να εισέλθει προκειμένου να βιώσει το έργο και να συναναστραφεί με τους "ηθοποιούς": πουλιά, των οποίων η δραστηριότητα δημιουργεί μια μουσική σύνθεση εφήμερη και συνεχώς επαναπροσδιοριζόμενη: Τα πουλιά πετούν τριγύρω, τρώνε τους σπόρους που έχουν τοποθετηθεί στα όργανα ή προσπαθούν να δημιουργήσουν φωλιές πάνω τους, αγνοώντας τα ηχητικά αποσπάσματα που δημιουργούν, όπως το σόλο κιθάρας του... Jimi Hendrix των πτηνών στο 00.45 του παραπάνω βίντεο...

All in my mind (XIII): Only Lovers Left Alive

   Well, I have to admit that St Valentine`s Day is not my favourite feast of the year, for all the right or wrong reasons you can think of, but it`s not an occasion to be missed, if one likes to make playlists under any pretext (guilty as charged!). 

   So today we celebrate love by mixing songs about all kinds of love, in any form or shape: love not yet confessed by The Zombies, foolish love by The Monophonics, love and betrayal by The Flock Of Seagulls, tainted love by Softcell and lovemaking by Ian Dury or the Hot Rats. This compilation is also proud to present "our very own" great Greek garage rock band The B-Sides, a punk rock love anthem by Johnny Thunders, as well as a Ramones` corny moment and the compelling but doomed love sung by Nick Cave, amongst others.

As I always do, I have to point out that "... in this blog`s music column a fictional collection is offered, with its cover, fully conceived by me, not for downloading but only for listening (and that`s why it`s entitled "All in my mind"!!!), in the form of a playlist, through the Grooveshark player.

   The speed of transitions from song to song or any "crashes" depend on the speed of your internet connection..."

   Λοιπόν, πρέπει να ομολογήσω ότι η μέρα του Αγίου Βαλεντίνου δεν είναι και η αγαπημένη μου γιορτή του έτους, για όλους τους σωστούς ή λάθος λόγους που μπορείτε να σκεφτείτε, όμως δεν είναι μια ευκαιρία που μπορεί να πάει χαμένη, αν σε κάποιον αρέσει να δημιουργεί μουσικές λίστες με κάθε πρόσχημα (ένοχος, όπως κατηγορούμαι!).

   Έτσι, σήμερα γιορτάζουμε τον έρωτα, επιλέγοντας τραγούδια για κάθε είδους αγάπη: μη εξομολογημένη αγάπη από τους Zombies, ηλίθια αγάπη  από τους Monophonics, αγάπη και προδοσία από τους Flock Of Seagulls, μολυσμένη αγάπη από τους Softcell και ερωτοτροπίες από τον Ian Dury ή τους Hot Rats. Αυτή η συλλογή με υπερηφάνια συμπεριλαμβάνει "τη δική μας" σπουδαία Ελληνική garage rock μπάντα των B-Sides, έναν ερωτικό ύμνο από τον Johnny Thunders, όπως επίσης και μια γλυκανάλατη στιγμή των Ramones και έναν καθηλωτικό αλλά καταδικασμένο έρωτα, τραγουδισμένο από τον Nick Cave, ανάμεσα σε άλλα.

   Όπως πάντα, πρέπει να επισημάνω ότι: "...σε αυτή τη στήλη προτείνεται μια πλήρης κατά φαντασίαν συλλογή, με το εξώφυλλό της, εξ ολοκλήρου έμπνευσής μου, χωρίς όμως να προσφέρεται για downloading, αλλά μόνο για ακρόαση (γι` αυτό εξάλλου και η στήλη ονομάζεται "All in my mind"!!!), με τη μορφή μιας playlist, μέσω του player του Grooveshark.

  Η ταχύτητα εναλλαγής των τραγουδιών ή τυχόν "κολλήματα" θα εξαρτώνται από την ταχύτητα της σύνδεσής σας."

TriBeCa Penthouse by Steven Harris Architects LLP

   Ένα ρετιρέ στην Tribeca στη ΝΥ όπου η ανεμπόδιστη θέα της γύρω περιοχής έχει αξιοποιηθεί στο έπακρο, με την χρήση υαλοπινάκων σε μεγάλη κλίμακα τόσο σε ύψος όσο και σε μήκος. Όλοι οι χώροι της κατοικίας απολαμβάνουν το φυσικό φως. Ο Steven Harris, καθηγητής αρχιτεκτονικής στο Yale, που ανέλαβε τη μελέτη του project, είχε την ευφυία να κάνει χρήση αρχιτεκτονικών τεχνασμάτων, όπως η σκάλα που δείχνει να αιωρείται στο χώρο, αλλά και να επιλέξει design κομμάτια μινιμαλιστικού χαρακτήρα, που ενισχύουν την ''καθαρότητα''του χώρου και δικαιώνουν την φιλοσοφία "less is more"...

                                                                           

   A penthouse in Tribeca in NY, where the unobstructed views of the surrounding area has been fully exploited with the use of glass on a large scale, both in height and length. All areas of this penthouse enjoy natural light. Steven Harris, professor of architecture at Yale, undertook the project, had the intelligence to use architectural tricks, like a staircase that seems to hover in space, but also to use design pieces of minimalist approach to enhance the "purity'' of the space and justify  "less is more" philosophy...

   Disco-funk leaders of the `70s, KC & The Sunshine Band, the multi-member and racially integrated band led by Harry Wayne "KC" Casey, were a true "hit factory", with some of the greatest all-time-dance hits like "Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty)," "I'm Your Boogieman," "Keep It Comin' Love," "Boogie Shoes" and more.

   "I Get Lifted", written by KC, was originally recorded by George McCrae and became a minor hit when included in their 1975 album by the same name, but this super-sexy and ultra-funky single was truly loved by hip hop producers and musicians who keep sampling it for more than 3 decades.

    Worn in the traditional way, like Humphrey Bogart did in "Casablanca", or in a hip, modern way as shown by Spanish model Jon Kortajarena for a GQ France editorial, the trench coat is an all-time-classic in a man`s wardrobe and one of the very first masculine looks adopted by women. "Round Up The Usual Suspects" Blog: Year One!

   It seems that a few days ago, without even realising it, our blog turned one! 
   Thanks to your involvement, which will keep us going, it has been a really exciting year for us (and hopefully for you, too!) and it was really great to see that our ideas or suggestions have truly been appreciated, judging by your comments. the views and the overall  statistics.

   Looking forward to an even more exciting 2nd year...

                                                           

   Φαίνεται ότι πριν λίγες μέρες, χωρίς καν να το καταλάβουμε, το μπλογκ μας έγινε ενός έτους!

   Χάρη στην ανάμειξή σας, που μας βοηθάει να συνεχίσουμε, ήταν ένας υπέροχος χρόνος για εμάς (ελπίζουμε και για εσάς, επίσης!) και ήταν υπέροχη η διαπίστωση ότι οι ιδέες και οι πρoτάσεις μας εκτιμήθηκαν πραγματικά, κρίνοντας από τα σχόλια, τις προβολές και τα συνολικά στατιστικά.

    Περιμένουμε με ανυπομονησία μια ακόμη πιο υπέροχη 2η χρονιά...

Rock `N `Roll Tales (X): Stiv Bators (1949-90), Too Much, Too Soon...

  Stiv Bators, the legendary frontman of the punk rock band The Dead Boys and also the lead singer of The Lords Of The New Church, was one of the most controversial artists of his time: he emerged as a raw and provocative singer of the early American punk rock scene, swam in the new wave waters as a goth rock figure and even wandered down power pop paths.
   Devil and angel at the same time, he will always be remembered as the performer who terrorised audiences with his out of order on-stage behaviour, as well as the kind hearted gentleman, as described by those who knew him well.

   Influenced by his majesty, the king, Iggy Pop, in his notorious live appearances with The Dead Boys (1977-79) he used to inflict physical injuries to himself, appearing bloody, wild and semi-crazy, often pretending to hang himself on stage.

    After their split, he formed The Lords Of The New Church in the early `80`s, in a goth/new wave turn, achieving success while still giving wild live shows: in one of them he was pronounced clinically dead for several minutes, after pretending to hang himself on stage... He survived near-death experience but after recording 3 studio albums he quit the band, firing the rest of its members after finding out that they had secretly placed an ad for a new singer, while he was recovering from a back injury sustained during a show, and did it all during a live performance, wearing a t-shirt with the ad printed on it, surprising the rest of the embarrassed members...

The people who got to know him in person talk of a different Stiv Bators, a nice guy, a funny and sweet person, gentle and kind, unlike his notorious raw and bizarre image. At the age of 41 he died in Paris from injuries sustained after being hit by a car, placed in the pantheon of the greatest performers of all time, along Iggy Pop or Mick Jagger and a few more of their kind....

   Οι άνθρωποι που τον γνωρίζαν προσωπικά μιλούν για έναν διαφορετικό Stiv Bators, έναν συμπαθητικό τύπο, αστείο και γλυκό, καλοσυνάτο και ευγενή, σε αντίθεση με τη διαβόητη παράξενη εικόνα του. Στην ηλικία των 41 πέθανε στο Παρίσι από τραυματισμό που προκλήθηκε όταν χτυπήθηκε από ένα αυτοκίνητο, τοποθετούμενος στο πάνθεον των μεγαλύτερων ερμηνευτών όλων των εποχών, μαζί με τον Iggy Pop ή τον Mick Jagger και λιγοστούς ακόμη του είδους τους ....

Mountain Retreat in New Zealand by Fearon Hay Architects

   A house built with monastic simplicity in New Zealand, a work of Fearon Hay architectural firm. It is a contemporary haven where natural materials such as stone and wood have been used, but at the same time it  has all the amenities that exist in an urban home, like heated floors, gas, electric heating.
   The view of the lake, the mountains and the wild vegetation is spectacular and that`s the reason why  simple, austere, almost primitive lines prevailed in the construction, managing to integrate the building into the landscape in a way that it`s not a disharmony in this natural environment.

                                                                         

   Ένα σπίτι χτισμένο με μοναστική απλότητα στη Νέα Ζηλανδία, έργο του αρχιτεκτονικού γραφείου Fearon Hay Architects. Αποτελεί ένα  σύγχρονο καταφύγιο στο οποίο έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί φυσικά υλικά όπως πέτρα και ξύλο, αλλά παράλληλα έχει όλες τις ανέσεις που έχει ένα σύγχρονο αστικό σπίτι όπως θερμαινόμενα δάπεδα, φυσικό αέριο, ηλεκτρική θέρμανση. 

  Η θέα στη λίμνη, τα βουνά και την πλούσια άγρια βλάστηση είναι μαγευτική και γι'αυτόν το λόγο στην κατασκευή επικράτησαν οι απλές, λιτές, σχεδόν αρχέγονες γραμμές που πέτυχαν να ενσωματωθεί το οίκημα στο τοπίο και να μην αποτελεί παραφωνία στο φυσικό περιβάλλον.
