The heartbreaking moment when the two friends met on opposite sides during a strike

    Post-war Brittany, France: two boys, Guy Burniaux and Jean-Yvon Antignac, grow up together as inseparable friends and classmates, going to the same parties and flirting with the same girls but as it often happens in real life, somewhere along the way they drifted apart.

    Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, France, April 6th, 1972: 25-year-old Guy Burniaux, a metalworker now at the local French Joint factory and his colleagues are on strike, demanding a balance in wages. Tension is built up, causing uprise. The government sends the CRS (French riot control forces) to liberate the occupied factory and as they charge, Guy Burniaux recognizes his childhood friend Jean-Yvon Antignac among the policemen. In the spur of the moment and with nerves on the edge, Guy attacks him...

    Jacques Gourmelen, photographer, was covering local news for the newspaper "Ouest-France":

"...“I took the photo on instinct. Burniaux had recognized his old friend and classmate,” said the photographer to his colleague Véronique Constance, on the 40th anniversary of this legendary strike. “I saw him go toward his friend and grab him by the collar. He wept with rage and told him, ‘Go ahead and hit me while you’re at it!’ The other one didn’t move a muscle..."

     This intense snapshot was all over the news and national press media and turned Guy into a symbol of the working class hero`s fight against oppression. The truth was that the story was blown way out of proportion, since in real life and after the events of the strike, Guy and Jean remained good friends and started meeting regurarly again. As it often happens, things are much more simple in real life and Guy Burniaux himself admitted that:

"...I had no rancor against him. Nor did I have a political statement to say to his face. That wasn't my style. I was in this as a worker. I was far less politicized that some of my friends..."

        "..."Τράβηξα τη φωτογραφία ενστικτωδώς. Ο Burniaux είχε αναγνωρίσει τον παλιό του φίλο και συμμαθητή", είπε ο φωτογράφος στη συνάδελφό του Véronique Constance για την 40η επέτειο της θρυλικής αυτής απεργίας. "Τον είδα να προχωρά προς τον φίλο του και να τον αρπάζει από το γιακά. Έκλαψε με οργή ​​και του είπε "Εμπρός, χτύπα με, αφού αυτό κάνεις!" Ο άλλος ούτε που κουνήθηκε... "

Rolling Stones, 1965: A Band Innocent To Their Destiny...

   There are times when I get the impression that anything concerning 

The Rolling Stoned has been seen, said or heard... or not?

   23 never-before-seen photos of the Rolling Stones, taken in 1965 by an unknown photographer during the Rolling Stones American tour (in the six-member lineup), were found in a flea market by Lauren White:

    “…I obviously knew it was the Stones, but it took about a week of looking them over to realize that this was really a very unique circumstance. After extensive research, I came to find that these are unpublished, never-before-seen photos of one of the most legendary bands in rock ‘n’ roll history. Not only that, they are beautifully composed, candid, raw and perfect in every way. They really convey a band innocent to their destiny…”

   23 φωτογραφίες που ποτέ στο παρελθόν δεν είχαν δημοσιευθεί, τραβηγμένες το 1965 από άγνωστο φωτογράφο κατά τη διάρκεια της Αμερικάνικης περιοδείας των Rolling Stones (με την εξαμελή σύνθεση), ανακαλύφθηκαν σε μια υπαίθρια αγορά από την Lauren White:

"...Προφανώς γνώριζα ότι ήταν οι Stones, αλλά μου πήρε καμιά εβδομάδα να τις κοιτάζω για να συνειδητοποιήσω ότι ήταν μια ιδιαίτερη περίσταση. Μετά από διεξοδική έρευνα, ανακάλυψα ότι ήταν αδημοσίευτες, πρωτοεμφανιζόμενες φωτογραφίες μιας από τις πιο θρυλικές μπάντες στην ιστορία του rock ‘n’ roll. The Mondrian Cake: Culinary Homage To Art

    Dutch painter Piet Mondrian is considered to be one of the founding contributors to the "De Stijl" art movement, mainly through the abstract forms of neoplasticism, which consisted of grids of vertical and horizontal black lines upon white ground and the use of the 3 primary colors (red, yellow and blue) to form compositions asymmetrically arranged. 

    His characteristic artwork influenced fashion and design and moreover became an inspiration for pastry chef Caitlin Freeman at the Blue Bottle café inside the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, whose most famous product is a culinary homage to Mondrian`s art.

    O Ολλανδός ζωγράφος Piet Mondrian θεωρείται ότι είναι ένας από τους θεμελιωτές του κινήματος τέχνης "De Stijl", κυρίως μέσα από τις αφηρημένες φόρμες του νεοπλαστικισμού, που αποτελούνται από κάθετα και οριζόντια πλέγματα μαύρων γραμμών σε λευκό φόντο με τη χρήση των 3 βασικών χρωμάτων (κόκκινο, κίτρινο και μπλε), σε ασύμμετρες συνθέσεις.
 
   Η χαρακτηριστική τέχνη του επηρέασε τη μόδα και το σχεδιασμό και, επιπλέον, έγινε πηγή έμπνευσης για τη σεφ ζαχαροπλαστικής Caitlin Freeman στο Blue Bottle Café μέσα στο Μουσείο Μοντέρνας Τέχνης του San Francisco, της οποίας το πιο φημισμένο προϊόν είναι ένας γαστρονομικός φόρος τιμής στην τέχνη του Mondrian.

Forever Young: "A Brooklyn Gang" Photographed By Bruce Davidson In 1959

   When I first saw Bruce Davidson`s photographs of a Brooklyn Gang I didn`t immediately realise what I was really looking at. They looked like they were parts of some fashion magazine`s editorial inspired by the style of the `50s or like photo stills from a cool movie about the rock`n`roll era. I was stunned to find out that the boys and girls photographed were true characters, real gang members of a `50s Brooklyn gang photographed in their everyday life.
   I never would have guessed that these seductive and intriguing photos had an even more intriguing story behind them. Read the following article to find out for yourselves...:

   "...In 1959, there were about 1,000 gang members in New York City, mainly teenage males from ethnically-defined neighbourhoods in the outer boroughs. In the spring of that year, Bruce Davidson read a newspaper article about outbreaks of street fighting in Prospect Park and travelled across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan in search of a gang to photograph.
   "I met a group of teenagers called the Jokers," he wrote in the afterword to his seminal book of insider reportage, Brooklyn Gang. "I was 25 and they were about 16. I could easily have been taken for one of them...
   ...With the Jokers, the boundary between detached observation and immersion in the subject matter became even more blurred. "In time they allowed me to witness their fear, depression and anger," he wrote. "I soon realised that I, too, was feeling their pain. In staying close to them, I uncovered my own feelings of failure, frustration and rage."...
   ...For several months Davidson followed the Jokers on their endless wanderings around their Brooklyn turf and beyond. He captured them hanging out in Prospect Park, where outdoor dances were held on weekend summer nights, and lounging on the beach at Coney Island. He snapped the young men as they killed time in a neighbourhood diner called Helen's Candy Store. In his photographs, the Jokers look both tough and innocent, uncertain adolescent kids caught in that hinterland between childhood and – this being New York – premature adulthood.

   Davidson's black-and-white images are cool and evocative, imbued with a sense of time and place that is palpable. The gang shared a working-class, Italian-Catholic background, but look like they have walked straight off the set of West Side Story. The girls are timelessly hip in tight pants and white tops, with pinned-up piles of jet black or peroxide blonde hair. The male dress style is Italian hipster meets American rockabilly – Sinatra meets Elvis. The threads are sharp, the hairstyles tall and quiffed, and the attitude, as caught by Davidson's camera, is either defiant or aloof to the point of disinterested....
   ...Brooklyn Gang, then, is a document of inner-city youth culture at a time before the term was even coined. It is also a requiem for a bunch of Italian-American kids who bonded and, for a time, found a kind of community that had been denied them elsewhere – at home, in the church, at school..."

   Όταν είδα για πρώτη φορά τις φωτογραφίες μιας συμμορίας του Μπρούκλιν τραβηγμένες από τον Bruce Davidson δεν συνειδητοποίησα αμέσως τι πραγματικά έβλεπα. Έμοιαζαν σαν να ήταν τμήμα κεντρικής φωτογράφησης κάποιου περιοδικού μόδας, εμπνευσμένης από το στυλ της δεκαετίας του '50 ή φωτογραφικά στιγμιότυπα από κάποια cool ταινία για την εποχή του rock 'n `roll. Έκπληκτος ανακάλυψα ότι τα αγόρια και τα κορίτσια που απεικονίζονται ήταν αληθινοί χαρακτήρες, το πραγματικά μέλη μιας συμμορίας των `50`s στο Μπρούκλιν που φωτογραφήθηκαν στην καθημερινή τους ζωή.

    ... Για αρκετούς μήνες ο Davidson ακολουθούσε τους "Jokers" στις ατελείωτες περιπλανήσεις τους γύρω και πέρα από τα χωράφια του Μπρούκλιν. Τους απεικόνισε να αράζουν στο Prospect Park, όπου γινόντουσαν υπαίθριοι χοροί  τις βραδιές των καλοκαιρινών Σαββατοκύριακων και να χαλαρώνουν στην παραλία του Coney Island. Φωτογράφησε τους νεαρούς άνδρες να σκοτώνουν την ώρα τους σε ένα συνοικιακό εστιατόριο της γειτονιάς που λεγόταν Helen's Candy Store. Στις φωτογραφίες του, οι "Jokers" φαίνονται εξίσου σκληροί, αλλά και αθώοι, αβέβαιοι έφηβοι παγιδευμένοι στην εν λόγω ενδοχώρα ανάμεσα στην παιδική ηλικία και -μια και μιλάμε για τη Νέα Υόρκη- την πρόωρη ενηλικίωση.

   Οι ασπρόμαυρες εικόνες του Davidson είναι μοντέρνες και νοσταλγικές, διαποτισμένες με μια αίσθηση του χρόνου και του τόπου που είναι χειροπιαστή. Η συμμορία είχε κοινή προέλευση  εργατικής τάξης, ιταλικού-Καθολικού υπόβαθρου, αλλά μοιάζουν σαν να βγήκαν κατ 'ευθείαν από τα σκηνικά του "West Side Story". Τα κορίτσια δείχνουν διαχρονικά μοντέρνα σε στενά παντελόνια και λευκά μπλουζάκια, με μαζεμένα κατάμαυρα ή οξυζενέ ξανθά μαλλιά. Οι ανδρικές εμφανίσεις είναι κάτι ανάμεσα σε μοντέρνες ιταλικές και αμερικανικές rockabilly - σαν ο Sinatra να συναντά τον Elvis. Τα ρούχα είναι κομψά, τα χτενίσματα ψηλά και χτενισμένα προς τα πίσω αλά `50s και το ύφος, όπως αποτυπώνεται στην κάμερα του Davidson, είτε είναι προκλητικό ή απόμακρο σε σημείο αδιαφορίας...
   ... Το  "Brooklyn Gang",  είναι ένα ντοκουμέντο της νεανικής αστικής κουλτούρας σε μια περίοδο που ο όρος δεν είχε καν επινοηθεί. Είναι, επίσης, ένα ρέκβιεμ για μια παρέα ιταλο-αμερικανών που δέθηκαν και για μια περίοδο, βρήκαν ένα είδος συντροφικότητας που τους είχαν αρνηθεί  αλλού -στο σπίτι, στην εκκλησία, στο σχολείο ... "

   ...If the 50s were the decade of the lady of elegance, of sophisticated clothes and haute couture, then the 60s heralded in the desire for political change, emancipation and the age of the prêt-à-porter collection ...    F.C. Gundlach της δεκαετίας του 1950, `60 και` 70 που επανειλημμένα ασχολήθηκαν με τα κοινωνικά φαινόμενα και τις τρέχουσες τάσεις στις εικαστικές τέχνες, απέκτησαν εμβληματική θέση και αφήνοντας το αρχικό τους πλαίσιο πίσω, βρήκαν τον δρόμο τους σε μουσεία και συλλογές.
