"Kassetofono": A Music Blog As The Soundtrack Of Your Future Memories

     As you are already aware, if you follow this blog regularly, music makes our life`s soundtrack here on Round Up The Usual Suspects and "Kassetofono" (greek for "Cassette Player") is the music blog that caught our attention recently. The idea and the message behind it is simple, yet powerful: "let music do the talking", through endless music playlists, catalogued by mood, artist or theme, that can be enjoyed online through a grooveshark player, sort of like the ones posted here in our "All In My Mind" Music Collections column.        

    Minimal and attractive in its aesthetics, this blog is all about music, greek or foreign, with the retro feeling of the mixtapes we made when we were younger and its content is truly appreciated by the pubic, judging from the fact that it has more than 30.000 likes on its Facebook page, for the time being. 

   "Kassetofono" was kind enough to post one of our music compilations, "It`s a...live" (click here for it), sent for the "Your Own Cassettes" category, as you can see pictured above, pointed by the red arrow (or click here, if you wish to see it in real), a participation that made us really happy.

     Όπως ήδη γνωρίζετε, αν παρακολουθείτε αυτό το blog τακτικά, με τη μουσική φτιάχνουμε το soundtrack της ζωή μας εδώ στο Round Up The Usual Suspects, εθισμένοι από μικροί, όταν φτιάχναμε τις πρώτες μας μουσικές συλλογές ακόμη σε κασσέτες, όπως είχαμε γράψει και σε παλιότερη ανάρτησή μας (δείτε εδώ: "Music Memories"). 
     Για τους λόγους αυτούς το "Κασετόφωνο" είναι το μουσικό blog που τράβηξε την προσοχή μας πρόσφατα. Η ιδέα και το μήνυμα πίσω από αυτό είναι απλό, αλλά ισχυρό: "αφήστε τη μουσική να μιλήσει", μέσα από ατέλειωτες μουσικές λίστες αναπαραγωγής, κατηγοριοποιημένες αναλόγως διάθεσης, καλλιτέχνη ή θέματος, τις οποίες μπορείτε να απολαύσετε διαδικτυακά μέσω ενός grooveshark player,  όπως αυτές που αναρτώνται εδώ στο Round Up The Usual Suspects στη μουσική μας στήλη "All In My Mind".
    Μίνιμαλ και ελκυστικό στην αισθητική του, αυτό το blog ασχολείται μόνο με τη μουσική, ελληνική και ξένη, με τη ρετρό αίσθητική των συλλογών σε κασέτες που κάναμε όταν ήμασταν νεότεροι και το περιεχόμενό του έχει πραγματικά εκτιμηθεί από το κοινό, αν κρίνουμε από το γεγονός ότι έχει περισσότερα από 30.000 likes στη σελίδα του στο Facebook (προς το παρόν) .
    Το "Κασετόφωνο" είχε την καλοσύνη να δημοσιεύσει μια από τις μουσικές συλλογές μας, την "It`s a...live" (κάντε κλικ εδώ για αυτή), την οποία στείλαμε για την κατηγορία "Οι Κασέτες Σας", όπως μπορείτε να δείτε να απεικονίζεται ανωτέρω, με την επισήμανση του κόκκινου βέλους (ή κάντε κλικ εδώ, αν θέλετε να το δείτε στην πραγματικότητα), μια συμμετοχή που μας έκανε πραγματικά ευτυχείς.

   23 never-before-seen photos of the Rolling Stones, taken in 1965 by an unknown photographer during the Rolling Stones American tour (in the six-member lineup), were found in a flea market by Lauren White:

    “…I obviously knew it was the Stones, but it took about a week of looking them over to realize that this was really a very unique circumstance. After extensive research, I came to find that these are unpublished, never-before-seen photos of one of the most legendary bands in rock ‘n’ roll history. Not only that, they are beautifully composed, candid, raw and perfect in every way. Αναδημοσίευση από το The Underestimator:

   23 φωτογραφίες που ποτέ στο παρελθόν δεν είχαν δημοσιευθεί, τραβηγμένες το 1965 από άγνωστο φωτογράφο κατά τη διάρκεια της Αμερικάνικης περιοδείας των Rolling Stones (με την εξαμελή σύνθεση), ανακαλύφθηκαν σε μια υπαίθρια αγορά από την Lauren White:

"...Προφανώς γνώριζα ότι ήταν οι Stones, αλλά μου πήρε καμιά εβδομάδα να τις κοιτάζω για να συνειδητοποιήσω ότι ήταν μια ιδιαίτερη περίσταση. Μετά από διεξοδική έρευνα, ανακάλυψα ότι ήταν αδημοσίευτες, πρωτοεμφανιζόμενες φωτογραφίες μιας από τις πιο θρυλικές μπάντες στην ιστορία του rock ‘n’ roll. Και όχι μόνο αυτό, αλλά ήταν υπέροχα ισορροπημένες, φυσικές, ακατέργαστες και τέλειες με κάθε τρόπο. Πραγματικά μεταφέρουν την αίσθηση μιας μπάντας αθώας ως προς τo πεπρωμένο της..."

   The Boys Next Door were Nick Cave and Mick Harvey`s first band in the pre-Birthday Party era. Their 1978 cover of Nancy Sinatra`s "These Boots Are Made For Walking" was their first single and this version definitely seems appropriate as the soundtrack of today`s post, since it`s one of Isabella`s favorites...

                                                               

Οι Boys Next Door ήταν το πρώτο συγκρότημα του Nick Cave και του Mick Harvey στην προ-Birthday Party εποχή. Η διασκευή τους του 1978 στο "These Boots Are Made For Walking" της Nancy Sinatra ήταν το πρώτο τους τραγούδι και αυτή η βερσιόν σίγουρα ταιριάζει ως το soundtrack της σημερινής ανάρτησης, μια και είναι από τα αγαπημένα της Ιζαμπέλλας...

Woody Guthrie: This Machine Kills Fascists

  “…Woody was a giant of the folk music genre. In addition to the de facto [American] national anthem of “This Land”, Woody’s songs… have been some of the most recognisable and enduring contributions to American folk music in the twentieth century… In many ways, Woody’s story is the modern American man’s story. He lived and wrote through the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the early tensions of the Cold War…” (via)

    "…In the popular imagination, Guthrie tends to epitomize the notion of authenticity. He travelled widely during the years of the Great Depression and wrote songs about migrants living along the Columbia River, dreaming about owning the land they toiled on…” (via) 

    “…Much of his music is raw, simple, and emotionally charged – just a man and his guitar. But it was also forged in his own contentious politics and experiences travelling the country in the 1930s – a time when economic and environmental disasters (the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, respectively) ravaged the country making breadlines, Hoovervilles, and civic unrest easier to find than a decent job.       Woody Guthrie, a folk icon and a radical, social activist, a singer and songwriter who influenced  musicians from Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen to Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer & The Clash or Lou Reed.

        He used to display the slogan phrase: “This Machine Kills Fascists” on his guitars as a manifesto of his belief in music, expressing his opposition to Fascism, an ideology he conceptualized  as a form of economic exploitation similar to slavery, denouncing fascists, particularly their leaders, as a group of gangsters who set out to rob the world (John S. All In My Mind (XV): Twenty Five Shades Of Isabella

     Being the proud parents of our lovely newborn Isabella, we decided to dedicate a music collection to her, consisting of songs that include her name in their title in any variation. What I found out, while researching for the appropriate songs on the internet, was that I had never realised how popular her name was in music until that moment. There are dozens of songs about Isabellas/Isabelles/Izabellas/Isabels/Isobels/Izobellas, ranging from pretty great to pretty decent ones, a fact that made my task even more challenging. The songs belong to a wide range of various music genres, from bossa nova to rock`n`roll or blues and from indie pop to new age or jazz, by artists from all over the world, creating a colourful language and music kaleidoscope .
     Finally, it all came down to this playlist that includes 25 carefully selected songs we hope you`ll enjoy.

     The collection starts off with the explosive rock`n`roll cover of Del Shannon`s "Sister Isabel" by Frank Black, former lead vocalist of the Pixies, in collaboration with Teenage Fanclub, telling the heartbreaking story of the young man that lost his girl to ...God:  

"...Far off in the distance, I can hear the bells
Beside a church there stands a girl I knew so well,
As I get closer, I can feel a chill,
She`s changing her name from Laura to Sister Isabel... 

...Isabel, am I really gonna lose you?
Isabel, does He need you more than I do?..."

     "Saint Isabelle"  follows up as an unbelievable folk rock dynamite by The Nightwatchman aka Tommy Morello, former member of Rage Against The Machine & Audioslave: 

"...I will always stand beside you, defend you and mend you, sanctify you,
I'll hold you and keep you and fight beside you
Follow you down love I'm right behind you..."

    The "Isabella"-entitled list includes songs from indie blues/rock band North Lakes, from French-American folk band Moriarty,  indie-pop singer and songwriter Dia Frampton and indie/pop/rock band Poppermost, with obvious Beatles, Queen and Beach Boys influences in their retro sound, as well as the (Fabulous) Wailers, a `60s authentic garage rock band in a Chuck Berry-influenced recording, the Tenagersintokyo, a dark synth-pop band with elements of  Siouxsie and the Banshees and X-Ray Spex in their sound and a jazz contribution by Dave Isaacs Trio. While Mr. Brace`s contribution is his Italian feelgood mood, this list also includes a mesmerizing tune by electro-indie band Starfucker, the stoner rock participation of  Clutch and the laid-back sound of Brazilian Tom Jobim, who is acknowledged as the father of bossa nova:

"...Isabella,
Wake up the sun is coming through the window,
We're riding with the sun, I feel your heart beat,
The morning light plays in your eyes with floating blue and white skyline,
A city in the skies for Isabella..."

     Other variations of the name include a few "Isabelles", from pop band Silverdop, from francophone Canadian rock singer Jean Leloup, with a sound reminiscent of Manu Chao, from Catacombo and its French alter ego, Dutronic, a garage rock band from Antwerp, Belgium, with a lo-fi cover of Nino Ferrer`s "Isabelle", from C4Space, an alternative/new wave band from Dresden, Germany and from dark San Antonio bluesman Javi Garcia:

"...Isabelle, I love you more than life itself,

But I never expected this kind of hell,

I`ve got bills on the table and my gun`s on the shelf, Isabelle...

...Who would `ve ever known it would have ended like this,

When we said "`till death do us part",

Who would have ever guessed that I`d put a hole in your chest,

To see if you had a heart, Isabelle..."

   Finally, an "Izabel" is also included, by Jimi Hendrix, as well as two "Isobels" from Dido and Bjork  and an "Isabel" by the Argentinian rockers Los Ratones Paranoicos, plus the powerful indie rock  "Isobella" by The Little Flames and an "Izzy", a unique emotionally ovewhelming indie pop melody by The Love Language. The final touch belongs to our very own new age composer Vangelis and it`s the wonderful "City Of Isabel" taken from the ost of the movie "1492: Conquest of Paradise".
    As I always do, I have to point out that "... in this blog`s music column a fictional collection is offered, with its cover, fully conceived by me in the form of a playlist, through the Grooveshark player.

      Ως περήφανοι γονείς της υπέροχης νεογέννητης Ιζαμπέλλας μας, αποφασίσαμε να της αφιερώσουμε μια μουσική συλλογή αποτελούμενη από τραγούδια που περιλαμβάνουν το όνομά της στον τίτλο τους σε οποιαδήποτε παραλλαγή. Αυτό που ανακάλυψα, καθώς ερευνούσα στο ίντερνετ για τα κατάλληλα τραγούδια, είναι οτι ποτέ δεν είχα συνειδητοποιήσει πόσο δημοφιλές είναι το όνομά της στη μουσική μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή. Υπάρχουν δεκάδες τραγούδια για Isabellas/Isabelles/Izabellas/Isabels/Isobels/Izobellas από σπουδαία μέχρι απλώς αξιοπρεπή, γεγονός που μετέτρεψε το εγχείρημά μου σε πρόκληση. Τα τραγούδια ανήκουν σε ένα ευρύ φάσμα διαφορετικών μουσικών ειδών, από bossa nova σε rock`n`roll ή blues και από indie pop σε new age ή jazz από καλλιτέχνες από όλο τον κόσμο, δημιουργώντας ένα πολύχρωμο γλωσσικό και μουσικό καλειδοσκόπιο.
    Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα είναι αυτή η λίστα που περιλαμβάνει 25 προσεκτικά επιλεγμένα τραγούδια που ελπίζουμε να απολαύσετε.
        Η συλλογή ξεκινά με την εκρηκτική rock'n`roll διασκευή του "Sister Isabel" του Del Shannon από τον Frank Black, πρώην τραγουδιστή των Pixies, σε συνεργασία με τους Teenage Fanclub, που αφηγείται την σπαραχτική ιστορία του νεαρού άνδρα που χάνει το κορίτσι του από το ...Θεό :

" ... Μακριά στο βάθος,  μπορώ να ακούσω τις καμπάνες,
Δίπλα σε μια εκκλησία στέκεται μια κοπέλα που ήξερα τόσο καλά ,
Καθώς πλησιάζω, μπορώ να αισθανθώ μια ψύχρα ,
Αλλάζει το όνομά της από Laura σε Αδελφή Isabel ...
... Isabel, στ`αλήθεια θα σε χάσω;
Isabel, δηλαδή Εκείνος σε χρειάζεται περισσότερο από εμένα;... "

     Το "Saint Isabelle" ακολουθεί ως ένας απίστευτος folk-rock δυναμίτης από τον The Nightwatchman ή αλλιώς Tommy Morello, πρώην μέλος των Rage Against The Machine και  των Audioslave :

"... Πάντα θα στέκομαι στο πλάϊ σου, θα σε υπερασπίζομαι και σε διαμορφώνω,
 θα σε ευλογώ, θα σε κρατώ και θα σε στηρίζω και θα αγωνίζομαι δίπλα σου,
Θα σε ακολουθώ αγάπη μου πάντα πίσω σου..."

     Η λίστα με την "Isabella" στον τίτλο περιλαμβάνει τραγούδια από την indie blues/rock μπάντα  North Lakes, από την γαλλο-αμερικανική folk μπάντα Moriarty, την indie-pop τραγουδίστρια και συνθέτη Dia Frampton και την indie/pop/rock μπάντα Poppermost, με προφανείς επιρροές στο ρετρό ήχο τους από τους Beatles, τους Queen και τους Beach Boys, καθώς και τους (Fabulous) Wailers, ένα ` 60`s αυθεντικό garage rock συγκρότημα σε μια ηχογράφηση επηρεασμένη από τον Chuck Berry, τους Tenagersintokyo, ένα σκοτεινό synth -pop συγκρότημα με στοιχεία των Siouxsie & the Banshees και των X-Ray Spex στον ήχο τους και την jazz συμβολή του Dave Isaacs Trio. Eνώ η  συμμετοχή του Mr. Brace περιλαμβάνει τη χαρούμενη ιταλική διάθεσή του, αυτός ο κατάλογος περιλαμβάνει επίσης μια μαγευτική μελωδία από την electro-indie μπάντα Starfucker, τη stoner rock συμμετοχή των Clutch και τον χαλαρό ήχο τoυ Tom Jobim, που θεωρείται ο πατέρας της bossa nova:

"...Ιζαμπέλλα,
Ξύπνα, ο ήλιος έρχεται μέσα από το παράθυρο,
Κάνουμε βόλτα με τον ήλιο, νιώθω την καρδιά σου να χτυπά,
Το πρωινό φως παίζει στα μάτια σου και πλέει στον γαλάζιο και λευκό ορίζοντα,
Μια πόλη στους ουρανούς για την Ιζαμπέλλα..."

       Άλλες παραλλαγές της ονομασίας περιλαμβάνουν μερικές "Isabelles", από το ποπ συγκρότημα Silverdop, από τον γαλλόφωνο καναδό ροκ τραγουδιστή Jean Leloup, με έναν ήχο που θυμίζει Manu Chao, από τους Catacombo και το γαλλικό alter ego τους, τους Dutronic, μια garage rock μπάντα από την Αμβέρσα στο Βέλγιο, με τη lo-fi διασκευή του "Isabelle" του Nino Ferrer, από τους C4Space, μια εναλλακτική/new wave μπάντα από τη Δρέσδη της Γερμανίας και από τον σκοτεινό bluesman του San Antonio, Javi Garcia:

 ... Isabelle, σ 'αγαπώ περισσότερο κι απ`την ίδια τη ζωή, 

Αλλά ποτέ δεν περίμενα αυτή την κόλαση,
Έχω λογαριασμούς στο τραπέζι και το όπλο μου στο ράφι, Isabelle ...
... Ποιος θα το`ξερε, ότι θα κατέληγε έτσι, 

Όταν είπαμε "μέχρι ο θάνατος να μας χωρίσει", 

Ποιος θα μπορούσε να φανταστεί ότι θα`σου`κανα μια τρύπα στο στήθος,  

Για να δω εάν είχες καρδιά, Isabelle ... "

      Τέλος, περιλαμβάνεται επίσης μια "Izabel" από τον Jimi Hendrix, καθώς επίσης δύο "Isobels" από την Dido και την Bjork και μια "Isabel" από τους Αργεντίνους rockers Los Ratones Paranoicos, συν την δυνατή indie rock  "Isobella" από τους The Little Flames καθώς και μια "Izzy", μια μοναδική συναισθηματικά ακαταμάχητη indie pop μελωδία από τους The Love Language. Η τελική πινελιά ανήκει στον πολύ δικό μας new age συνθέτη Vangelis (Βαγγελη Παπαθανασίου) και είναι το υπέροχο "City Of Isabel" που περιλαμβάνεται στο σάουντρακ της ταινίας "1492: Conquest of Paradise".

       Όπως πάντα, πρέπει να επισημάνω ότι: "...σε αυτή τη στήλη προτείνεται μια πλήρης κατά φαντασίαν συλλογή, με το εξώφυλλό της, εξ ολοκλήρου έμπνευσής μου, με τη μορφή μιας playlist, μέσω του player του Grooveshark.

  Η ταχύτητα εναλλαγής των τραγουδιών ή τυχόν "κολλήματα" θα εξαρτώνται από την ταχύτητα της σύνδεσής σας."
