It was 27 years ago today when the ancient Kallimarmaro Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens, home to the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, opened for a two-day hot rock festival, called "Rock in Athens `85". Athens held a series of cultural events, since it was chosen as the first ever European Capital of Culture, and some of the greatest bands were included in the festival's line-up: Telephone, Stranglers, Depeche Mode & Culture Club for the 1st day and Talk Talk, The Cure, Nina Hagen & The Clash for the 2nd.
Keeping in mind that not many concerts were being held in Greece at the time, people were really thrilled for such a huge event for the era's standards, with Clash being the most anticipated act. An estimated 90.000 people attended the festival in total.

The diversity of music styles of the 1st day brought together punks, rockers, new-wavers and pop fans in a surreal mixture of Greeks and tourists with different music backgrounds, which led to tension and conflict between Boy George of Culture Club and part of the audience, when some in the crowd threw bottles and stones at him and he replied that he would show them his ass if he wasn't such a nice ...lady!
Depeche Mode surprised everyone with a performance that definitely helped broaden the electropop fan base in Greece, while
The Stranglers had to fight the disadvantages of poor sound and appearing on stage too early in the Athenian summer afternoon, during a particularly hot day. The 1st day was marked by clashes outside the stadium between police and people who tried to invade the concert without tickets, leading to beatings, riots, injuries, fires and chasing in the streets.

As for the 2nd day performances,
The Cure made an appearance that established them in Greece as post-punk/gothic rock pionners, but
the undisputed kings of the 2nd day and the whole festival were
The Clash, with a high-energy performance that drove the audience insane, just a few months before their break-up in 1986.
"Rock in Athens `85", that 2-day music marathon is looked upon as a milestone for concerts in modern history of live events in Greece.
Ήταν σαν σήμερα 27 χρόνια πριν όταν το αρχαίο Καλλιμάρμαρο Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο στην Αθήνα, έδρα των πρώτων σύγχρονων Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων του 1896, άνοιξε για ένα διήμερο καυτό φεστιβάλ, με την ονομασία "Rock in Athens `85". Η Αθήνα διοργάνωσε μια σειρά πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων, μια και είχε επιλεγεί ως η πρώτη Ευρωπαϊκή Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα, και μερικά από τα σπουδαιότερα συγκροτήματα συμπεριελήφθηκαν στους συμμετέχοντες του φεστιβάλ: Telephone, Stranglers, Depeche Mode & Culture Club για την 1η μέρα και οι Talk Talk, The Cure, Nina Hagen & The Clash για τη 2η.
Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι δεν γινόντουσαν πολλές συναυλίες στην Αθήνα εκείνης της εποχής, το κοινό ήταν πραγματικά ενθουσιασμένο για ένα τεράστιο για τα δεδομένα της εποχής γεγονός, με τους Clash να είναι η συμμετοχή που αναμενόταν περισσότερο. Υπολογίζεται ότι 90.000 άνθρωποι παρακολούθησαν συνολικά το φεστιβάλ.
Η ποικιλία των μουσικών ειδών της 1ης μέρας συγκέντρωσε στο κοινό πανκς, ροκάδες, new-wavers και οπαδούς της ποπ σε σε μια σουρεαλιστική ανάμιξη Ελλήνων και τουριστών με διαφορετικά μουσικά υπόβαθρα που οδήγησε σε ένταση και σύγκρουση του Boy George των Culture Club με μερίδα του κοινού, όταν κάποιοι από το πλήθος του πέταξαν πέτρες και μπουκάλια και εκείνος τους απάντησε ότι θα τους έδειχνε τον κ*λ* του αν ο ίδιος δεν ήταν ...μια τόσο ευγενική κυρία! Οι Depeche Mode εξέπληξαν τους πάντες με μια εμφάνιση που σίγουρα συνέβαλε στη διεύρυνση του κοινού της ηλεκτρονικής ποπ στην Ελλάδα, ενώ οι Stranglers χρειάστηκε να αντιμετωπίσουν τα μειονεκτήματα του κακού ήχου και της εμφάνισής τους στη σκηνή πολύ νωρίς σε ένα αθηναϊκό καλοκαιρινό απόγευμα μιας ιδιαίτερα ζεστής μέρας. Η πρώτη μέρα σημαδεύτηκε από συγκρούσεις έξω από το στάδιο ανάμεσα σε αστυνομία και κάποιους που προσπάθησαν να εισέλθουν στη συναυλία χωρίς εισιτήριο, οδηγώντας σε ξύλο, ταραχές, τραυματισμούς, φωτιές και κυνηγητά στους δρόμους.

Όσο για τις συμμετοχές της 2ης μέρας, οι Cure με την εμφάνισή τους καθιερώθηκαν στην Ελλάδα ως πρωτοπόροι του μεταπάνκ κινήματος/γοτθικού ροκ, ενώ οι αδιαμφισβήτητοι βασιλιάδες της 2ης μέρας και του φεστιβάλ συνολικά ήταν οι Clash με μια εκρηκτικής ενέργειας εμφάνιση που ξετρέλανε το κοινό, μόλις λίγους μήνες πριν από τη διάλυσή τους το 1986.
Το
"Rock in Athens `85", αυτός ο διήμερος μουσικός μαραθώνιος, θεωρείται ορόσημο ως προς τις συναυλίες στη σύγχρονη Ελληνική ιστορία των ζωντανών εκδηλώσεων.
