Natalie Curtis On Her Dad, Ian, Of The Joy Division...

   Ian Curtis was the talented singer and frontman of Joy Division, probably the world`s most influential post-punk band. Ian`s haunting and distinctive vocals, the band`s melancholic, dark sound, as well as their emotional, pessimistic and occasionally nihilistic lyrics were elements that made them leaders of the post-punk/new wave scene of the late `70s and pioneers of the music genre, later defined as "goth-rock", with obvious influences on bands, such as The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus. Ian Curtis struggled with epilepsy and depression, resulting to his tragic end, committing suicide by hanging at the age of 23, but his legacy was enough to turn him into a cult figure and a true legend in the history of music.

    ...But that`s what the rest of the world knows or thinks about him. His daughter Natalie Curtis, photographer, who never really got to know him, since he died when she was just one, thinks of him plainly as her dad and stated what seems to be so obvious:

   "...I don’t really listen to Joy Division very much," she says. "I would if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s my dad singing. Who wants to listen to their dad singing? It’s like watching your dad dance. It’s just dead embarrassing. Your dad’s never cool, is he?..."

    

  Ο Ian Curtis ήταν ο ταλαντούχος τραγουδιστής και ηγέτης των Joy Division, ίσως της πιο επιδραστικής post-punk μπάντας παγκοσμίως. Τα χαρακτηριστικά φωνητικά του Ian που σε στοιχειώνουν, ο μελαγχολικός, σκοτεινός ήχος της μπάντας, καθώς και οι συναισθηματικοί, πεσιμιστικοί και περιστασιακά μηδενιστικοί στίχοι τους ήταν τα στοιχεία που τους έκαναν ηγέτες της post-punk/new wave σκηνής στα τέλη της δεκαετίας '70 και πρωτοπόρους του μουσικού είδους που αργότερα προσδιορίστηκε ως "goth-rock", με προφανείς επιρροές σε συγκροτήματα όπως οι Cure, οι Siouxsie and the Banshees και οι Bauhaus. Forever Young: "A Brooklyn Gang" Photographed By Bruce Davidson In 1959

   When I first saw Bruce Davidson`s photographs of a Brooklyn Gang I didn`t immediately realise what I was really looking at. They looked like they were parts of some fashion magazine`s editorial inspired by the style of the `50s or like photo stills from a cool movie about the rock`n`roll era. I was stunned to find out that the boys and girls photographed were true characters, real gang members of a `50s Brooklyn gang photographed in their everyday life.
   I never would have guessed that these seductive and intriguing photos had an even more intriguing story behind them. Read the following article to find out for yourselves...:

   "...In 1959, there were about 1,000 gang members in New York City, mainly teenage males from ethnically-defined neighbourhoods in the outer boroughs. In the spring of that year, Bruce Davidson read a newspaper article about outbreaks of street fighting in Prospect Park and travelled across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan in search of a gang to photograph.
   "I met a group of teenagers called the Jokers," he wrote in the afterword to his seminal book of insider reportage, Brooklyn Gang. "I was 25 and they were about 16. I could easily have been taken for one of them...
   ...With the Jokers, the boundary between detached observation and immersion in the subject matter became even more blurred. "In time they allowed me to witness their fear, depression and anger," he wrote. "I soon realised that I, too, was feeling their pain. In staying close to them, I uncovered my own feelings of failure, frustration and rage."...
   ...For several months Davidson followed the Jokers on their endless wanderings around their Brooklyn turf and beyond. He captured them hanging out in Prospect Park, where outdoor dances were held on weekend summer nights, and lounging on the beach at Coney Island. He snapped the young men as they killed time in a neighbourhood diner called Helen's Candy Store. In his photographs, the Jokers look both tough and innocent, uncertain adolescent kids caught in that hinterland between childhood and – this being New York – premature adulthood.

   Davidson's black-and-white images are cool and evocative, imbued with a sense of time and place that is palpable. The gang shared a working-class, Italian-Catholic background, but look like they have walked straight off the set of West Side Story. The girls are timelessly hip in tight pants and white tops, with pinned-up piles of jet black or peroxide blonde hair. The male dress style is Italian hipster meets American rockabilly – Sinatra meets Elvis. The threads are sharp, the hairstyles tall and quiffed, and the attitude, as caught by Davidson's camera, is either defiant or aloof to the point of disinterested....
   ...Brooklyn Gang, then, is a document of inner-city youth culture at a time before the term was even coined. It is also a requiem for a bunch of Italian-American kids who bonded and, for a time, found a kind of community that had been denied them elsewhere – at home, in the church, at school..."

   Όταν είδα για πρώτη φορά τις φωτογραφίες μιας συμμορίας του Μπρούκλιν τραβηγμένες από τον Bruce Davidson δεν συνειδητοποίησα αμέσως τι πραγματικά έβλεπα. Έμοιαζαν σαν να ήταν τμήμα κεντρικής φωτογράφησης κάποιου περιοδικού μόδας, εμπνευσμένης από το στυλ της δεκαετίας του '50 ή φωτογραφικά στιγμιότυπα από κάποια cool ταινία για την εποχή του rock 'n `roll. Έκπληκτος ανακάλυψα ότι τα αγόρια και τα κορίτσια που απεικονίζονται ήταν αληθινοί χαρακτήρες, το πραγματικά μέλη μιας συμμορίας των `50`s στο Μπρούκλιν που φωτογραφήθηκαν στην καθημερινή τους ζωή.

    ... Για αρκετούς μήνες ο Davidson ακολουθούσε τους "Jokers" στις ατελείωτες περιπλανήσεις τους γύρω και πέρα από τα χωράφια του Μπρούκλιν. Τους απεικόνισε να αράζουν στο Prospect Park, όπου γινόντουσαν υπαίθριοι χοροί  τις βραδιές των καλοκαιρινών Σαββατοκύριακων και να χαλαρώνουν στην παραλία του Coney Island. Φωτογράφησε τους νεαρούς άνδρες να σκοτώνουν την ώρα τους σε ένα συνοικιακό εστιατόριο της γειτονιάς που λεγόταν Helen's Candy Store. Στις φωτογραφίες του, οι "Jokers" φαίνονται εξίσου σκληροί, αλλά και αθώοι, αβέβαιοι έφηβοι παγιδευμένοι στην εν λόγω ενδοχώρα ανάμεσα στην παιδική ηλικία και -μια και μιλάμε για τη Νέα Υόρκη- την πρόωρη ενηλικίωση.

   Οι ασπρόμαυρες εικόνες του Davidson είναι μοντέρνες και νοσταλγικές, διαποτισμένες με μια αίσθηση του χρόνου και του τόπου που είναι χειροπιαστή. Η συμμορία είχε κοινή προέλευση  εργατικής τάξης, ιταλικού-Καθολικού υπόβαθρου, αλλά μοιάζουν σαν να βγήκαν κατ 'ευθείαν από τα σκηνικά του "West Side Story". Τα κορίτσια δείχνουν διαχρονικά μοντέρνα σε στενά παντελόνια και λευκά μπλουζάκια, με μαζεμένα κατάμαυρα ή οξυζενέ ξανθά μαλλιά. Οι ανδρικές εμφανίσεις είναι κάτι ανάμεσα σε μοντέρνες ιταλικές και αμερικανικές rockabilly - σαν ο Sinatra να συναντά τον Elvis. Τα ρούχα είναι κομψά, τα χτενίσματα ψηλά και χτενισμένα προς τα πίσω αλά `50s και το ύφος, όπως αποτυπώνεται στην κάμερα του Davidson, είτε είναι προκλητικό ή απόμακρο σε σημείο αδιαφορίας...
   ... Το  "Brooklyn Gang",  είναι ένα ντοκουμέντο της νεανικής αστικής κουλτούρας σε μια περίοδο που ο όρος δεν είχε καν επινοηθεί. Είναι, επίσης, ένα ρέκβιεμ για μια παρέα ιταλο-αμερικανών που δέθηκαν και για μια περίοδο, βρήκαν ένα είδος συντροφικότητας που τους είχαν αρνηθεί  αλλού -στο σπίτι, στην εκκλησία, στο σχολείο ... "

Rock `N `Roll Tales (XI): The Rebirth Of Death: A Punk Fairy Tale With A Happy Ending

   "...In the 1970s, the music of Detroit could be split into two powerful scenes: the black soul, funk and R&B of Motown and the white rock 'n' roll of The Stooges, MC5, Bob Seger and Alice Cooper.       
   Somewhere in the middle was "Death". Bobby Hackney sang in the band, which also featured his brothers: Dannis played drums; David played guitar and wrote the songs.
   "We didn't fit in at all," says Bobby. "The rock bands that we identified with ... we didn't hang out with those guys. We were in the inner city, on the east side, in the black community. Most of the bands were doing stuff like Al Green, Earth Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers. Being in the black community and having a rock band, people just looked at us like we was weird. After we got done with a song, instead of cheering and clapping, people would just be looking at us."

   In 1974 the group...was approached by Columbia Records mogul Clive Davis for a record deal, but Davis requested the band choose a more commercially relatable group name. Death refused. Bobby explained to NPR, the "concept was spinning death from the negative to the positive. It was a hard sell."

    The group broke up in 1977, before completing a single album.."

   "...Bobby Hackney Jr. heard two of the songs online:

   "I was just floored. I was blown away. I just couldn't believe that it came out of our bloodline," he says. "I immediately called my father and I was like, 'Dad, why didn't you tell us about Death? Why didn't you ever show us these recordings? They're amazing.'"
   Bobby Jr., two of his brothers and two of their friends formed a band called Rough Francis to play Death's songs. The legend grew of an uncompromising black rock band that predated punk, and last year, the independent label Drag City released the 1975 album, called ...For The World To See. 
   For Bobby Sr., the belated recognition is bittersweet. "David never wavered on the fact that the world one day would know about Death," says his brother. "He always believed it, right to the very end. ...And he said, "Listen, the world's gonna come looking for this music". This was maybe a year before he died.
   "We have a saying, my brother and I: 'We're like passengers on a train, man. We're just gonna ride it to the station....And we don't know how long the journey will be, but one thing we will do, and we're committed to doing, and that is to honor our brother David every step of the way."...

     Rejected for their sound, their name, and their color, 34 years later the band "Death" began receiving what is now world-wide recognition for the Rock`N`Roll music they created. An independent film titled "A Band Called "Death": The Documentary",  was released in 2012, telling the unbelievable story of these visionary musicians...

   "... Όχι μόνο ήταν η πρώτη μαύρη πανκ μπάντα - ήταν αναμφισβήτητα η πρώτη πανκ μπάντα ... Τελεία. 

   Το 1974 το συγκρότημα ... προσεγγίστηκε από τον μεγιστάνα της Columbia Records Clive Davis για ένα δισκογραφικό συμβόλαιο, αλλά ο Davis ζήτησε από το συγκρότημα να επιλέξει ένα πιο εμπορικά αντιληπτό όνομα. Οι "Death" το αρνήθηκαν. Ο Bobby εξήγησε στο NPR ότι "το νόημα ήταν να μετατρέψουμε τον θάνατο από κάτι αρνητικό σε κάτι θετικό. Ήταν δύσκολο να πουληθεί."

   "Αισθάνθηκα ισοπεδωμένος. Έπαθα πλάκα.  Απλά δεν μπορούσα να πιστέψω ότι αυτό προερχόταν από την οικογένειά μας", λέει. "Τηλεφώνησα αμέσως στον πατέρα μου και του είπα: "Μπαμπά, γιατί δεν μας είπες για τους Death; Γιατί δεν ποτέ δεν μας έδειξες αυτές τις ηχογραφήσεις; Είναι καταπληκτικές!"
    Ο Bobby ο νεώτερος, με δύο από τους αδελφούς του και δύο από τους φίλους τους σχημάτισαν μια μπάντα που ονομάζεται Rough Francis για να παίξει τα τραγούδια των Death. Ο θρύλος ενός ασυμβίβαστου μαύρου πανκ συγκροτήματος που προηγήθηκε του κινήματος του πανκ γιγαντώθηκε, και πέρυσι η ανεξάρτητη εταιρεία Drag City κυκλοφόρησε το άλμπουμ του 1975, που ονομάζεται ...For The World To See.    

 
   Για τον Bobby τον πρεσβύτερο η καθυστερημένη αναγνώριση είναι γλυκόπικρη: "O David ποτέ δεν αμφιταλαντευόταν για το γεγονός ότι ο κόσμος μία ημέρα θα μάθαινε για τους Death, λέει ο αδελφός του. "To πίστευε πάντα, μέχρι το τέλος του.... Και είπε,"Ακούστε με, ο κόσμος θα έρθει ψάχνοντας για αυτή τη μουσική". Αυτό έγινε περίπου ένα χρόνο πριν πεθάνει."


    "Έχουμε ένα ρητό, ο αδελφός μου και εγώ: Είμαστε σαν τους επιβάτες σε ένα τραίνο, φίλε. Εμείς απλά θα το οδηγήσουμε στο σταθμό .... Και δεν ξέρουμε πόσο καιρό θα κρατήσει το ταξίδι, αλλά ένα πράγμα που θα κάνουμε και είμαστε αποφασισμένοι να το κάνουμε, είναι να τιμήσουμε τον αδελφό μας David  σε κάθε βήμα του δρόμου αυτού...".

  34 χρόνια μετά την απόρριψη για τον ήχο τους, το όνομά τους και το χρώμα τους, το συγκρότημα των "Death" άρχισε να λαμβάνει αυτό που μετατρέπεται πλέον σε παγκόσμια αναγνώριση για την Ροκ `N` Roll μουσική που δημιούργησαν. Μια ανεξάρτητη ταινία με τίτλο "Μια μπάντα που ονομάζεται "Θάνατος": Το ντοκιμαντέρ", κυκλοφόρησε το 2012, λέγοντας την απίστευτη ιστορία αυτών των μουσικών οραματιστών....

"CBGB": The Movie (2013)

   Once upon a time, in early `70`s New York, Hilly Kristal was a man with a dream to own a Country, Bluegrass and Blues club (CBGB) but had difficulty booking the bands he liked, so he decided to try different musical styles: the result was the foundation of a club that became the world`s most legendary underground rock`n`roll & punk rock club, making Hilly Kristal the "Godfather of New York`s punk rock scene", the man who gave The  Ramones, Television,  Patti Smith, The Dead Boys, The Fleshtones,The Cramps, The B-52's, Iggy Pop, Blondie, Joan Jett, Talking Heads, the Police & many more the chance to become music legends.

   This year a movie about the Temple of Punk & New Wave is planned to be released, with many fresh faces in the roles of Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Patti Smith, Stiv Bators. The film is highly anticipated and there`s already much controversy and talk whether the performances and Randall Miller`s directing will live up to the expectations.

   In any case, the only thing that is sure is that the soundtrack will definitely be explosive, since the movie "CBGB" will feature more than 40 songs of the period.

   Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό, στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του `70 στη Νέα Υόρκη, ο Hilly Kristal ήταν ένας άνθρωπος με όνειρο να έχει ένα Country, Bluegrass και Blues Club (CBGB), όμως αντιμετώπιζε δυσκολίες να κλείσει τις μπάντες που του άρεσαν κι έτσι αποφάσισε να δοκιμάσει διαφορετικά μουσικά στυλ: το αποτέλεσμα ήταν η ίδρυση ενός club που έγινε το πιο θρυλικό underground rock` n `roll και punk rock club στον κόσμο, καθιστώντας τον Hilly Kristal το "νονό της πανκ ροκ σκηνής" της Νέας Υόρκης, τον άνθρωπο που έδωσε στους Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, The Dead Boys, The Fleshtones, Cramps, The B-52`s, Iggy Pop, Blondie, Joan Jett, Talking Heads, Police και πολλούς αλλους την ευκαιρία να γίνουν μουσικοί θρύλοι.
    Φέτος, μια ταινία για το Ναό του Punk και New Wave έχει προγραμματιστεί να κυκλοφορήσει, με πολλά νέα πρόσωπα στους ρόλους των Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Patti Smith, Stiv Bators. Η ταινία είναι πολυαναμενόμενη και υπάρχει ήδη πολλή διαμάχη και συζήτηση κατά πόσον οι ερμηνείες και η σκηνοθεσία του Randall Miller θα ανταποκριθούν στις προσδοκίες.
    Σε κάθε περίπτωση, το μόνο πράγμα που είναι βέβαιο είναι ότι το soundtrack σίγουρα θα είναι εκρηκτικό, αφού η ταινία "CBGB" θα περιλαμβάνει περισσότερα από 40 τραγούδια της περιόδου.
