"Sunday Lamp": Let There Be Light (& Shelf)!

   "Sunday Lamp" is shelf of minimalistic design with a light, produced by designer Martina Carpelan from Studio Frost Produkt, with the option to choose between natural light (from a candle) or artificial light (from a bulb), depending on how the socket is switched. It can "accomodate" a book, a cup or anything similar and it`s a low-cost solution for spaces like the bedroom, the guest room etc, appropriately replacing the classic bedside table in its modern way.

                                                                                 

  Το "Sunday Lamp" είναι ένα λιτό σε σχεδιασμό ράφι με φως, της σχεδιάστριας Martina Carpelan, από το Studio Frost Produkt, με δυνατότητα επιλογής ανάμεσα σε φυσικό φωτισμό (με κερί) ή σε τεχνητό φωτισμό (με λάμπα), ανάλογα με το πως θα στρέψει κανείς την υποδοχή. Μπορεί να ''φιλοξενήσει'' ένα βιβλίο, μια κούπα ή οτιδήποτε παρόμοιο και είναι μια οικονομική λύση για χώρους όπως η κρεβατοκάμαρα, ο ξενώνας κ.λ.π.,  αντικαθιστώντας επάξια το κλασσικό κομοδίνο με το μοντέρνο στυλ του.

Rock `N Roll Tales VII: The Sex Pistols & The Train Robber in Brazil

    1978: Following the Sex Pistols` final and disastrous U.S. tour and with their bass player Sid Vicious hospitilized after he OD`ed, Johnny Rotten, singer of the band, which is regarded as one of the patriarchs of punk rock music and one of the most influential acts in music history, decided to announce their break-up and engaged in a legal battle with the band`s notorious manager, Malcom McLaren, accusing him of withholding their profits and leaving them broke. But McLaren, being the cunning mastermind that he was and also a follower of the "any publicity is good publicity (as long as it`s provocative enough)" dogma, had quite a different plan: he wanted a Sex Pistols movie and moreover he wanted them to sing with Ronnie Biggs! 

    Who was Ronnie Biggs? He was a small-time British crook who at the age of 34 achieved every criminal`s dream: he had participated in the 1963 Great Train Robbery and with other gang members stole the amount of 2.600.000  pounds from a mail train, the equivalent of around 50.000.000 euros today!!! He was arrested but managed to escape from prison and after undergoing plastic surgery, he finally fled to Rio de Janeiro, choosing Brazil because of the lack of an extradition treaty with the United Kingdom. Having reached the status of  a celebrity icon with mythical proportions in the villain world, Ronnie Biggs was enjoying his life in Brazil, as a womanizer, drinking, hosting parties as a tourist attraction, selling t-shirts and coffee cups with his face printed on them.

   Collaborating with this man, who was one of the most wanted by British authorities, was Malcolm McLaren provocative dream and it came true in 1978: right after the disbandment of the Sex Pistols he sent the remaing two members of the group, Paul Cook and Steve Jones, to meet with Biggs in Rio and together they recorded  "No One Is Innocent", a single with Ronnie Biggs singing, that reached no.6 in the UK charts, sold over seven million copies worldwide and appeared on "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle", the 1978 soundtrack album of a film released under the same name in 1980. Biggs also appeared in the movie.

   This controversial act and the death of Sid Vicious in 1979 could definitely be considered as the last chapters in the Sex Pistols chaotic history...

                                                                     

  1978: Αμέσως μετά την τελευταία και καταστροφική αμερικανική περιοδεία των Sex Pistols και με τον μπασίστα τους Sid Vicious νοσηλευόμενο από υπερβολική δόση, ο Johnny Rotten, τραγουδιστής του συγκροτήματος που θεωρείται από τους πατριάρχες της πανκ ροκ μουσικής και ένα από τα σχήματα με τη μεγαλύτερη επιρροή στην ιστορία της μουσικής, αποφάσισε να ανακοινώσει τη διάλυσή τους και να εμπλακεί σε μια δικαστική διαμάχη με τον διαβόητο μάνατζερ του συγκροτήματος Malcolm McLaren, κατηγορώντας τον ότι παρακρατά τα κέρδη τους και τους εγκατέλειψε άφραγκους. Όμως ο McLaren, ως πανούργος εγκέφαλος και οπαδός του δόγματος "κάθε είδους δημοσιότητα είναι καλή δημοσιότητα (εφόσον είναι αρκετά προκλητική)" είχε ένα διαφορετικό σχέδιο: επιθυμούσε μια ταινία για τους Sex Pistols και επιπλέον, ήθελε να τραγουδήσουν με τον Ronnie Biggs!

   Ποιος ήταν ο Ronnie Biggs? Ένας Βρετανός μικρο-κακοποιός, που σε ηλικία 34 ετών πραγματοποίησε το όνειρο κάθε εγκληματία: πήρε μέρος στη Μεγάλη Ληστεία του Τρένου το 1963 και μαζί με άλλα μέλη συμμορίας έκλεψε 2.600.000 λίρες από μια ταχυδρομική χρηματαποστολή, ποσό που σήμερα αντιστοιχεί σε 50.000.000 ευρώ!!! Συνελήφθη, αλλά δραπέτευσε από τη φυλακή και μετά από πλαστική επέμβαση το έσκασε στο Ρίο ντε Τζανέϊρο, επιλέγοντας τη Βραζιλία λόγω έλλειψης συμφωνίας έκδοσης εγκληματιών στην Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Αγγίζοντας το μέγεθος μιας διασημότητας με μυθικές διαστάσεις στον κόσμο των κακοποιών, ο Ronnie Biggs απολάμβανε τη ζωή του στη Βραζιλία ως γυναικοκατακτητής, πίνοντας, οργανώνοντας πάρτυ ως τουριστικό αξιοθέατο, πουλώντας μπλουζάκια και κούπες με τυπωμένο το πρόσωπό του πάνω τους.

   Η συνεργασία με αυτόν τον άνθρωπο, που ήταν ένας από τους πλέον καταζητούμενους από τις Βρετανικές αρχές, ήταν το προκλητικό όνειρο του Μalcolm McLaren, που πραγματοποιήθηκε το 1978: αμέσως μετά τη διάλυση των Sex Pistols έστειλε τα υπόλοιπα δυο μέλη του συγκροτήματος, τους Paul Cook και Steve Jones, να συναντηθούν με τον Biggs στο Ρίο και μαζί του ηχογράφησαν το "No One Is Innocent (Κανείς Δεν Είναι Αθώος)", ένα κομμάτι με τον Ronnie Biggs να τραγουδά, που έφτασε στο νο. 6 του Βρετανικού πίνακα επιτυχιών, πούλησε πάνω από 7 εκ. αντίτυπα παγκοσίως και συμπεριελήφθη στο άλμπουμ του 1978 "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle", το soundtrack της ομώνυμης ταινίας που παίχθηκε το 1980.    Αυτή η  αμφιλεγόμενη ενέργεια και ο θάνατος του Sid Vicious το 1979 μπορούν σίγουρα να χαρακτηριστούν ως τα τελευταία κεφάλαια της χαοτικής ιστορίας των Sex Pistols....

"LaLaLa" - Nouvelle Vague feat. Julie Delpy

   Julie Delpy, French actress, director and screenwriter produced the film "2 Days in Paris" in 2007 and also composed its soundtrack. 

     For this movie she performed "LaLaLa", a song she co-wrote with Marc Collin of the french band Nouvelle Vague, whose discography is totally based on covers of new wave and punk hits, transformed into bossa nova-style rhythms.

  In this case they have composed a trully original song with  a retro-60`s sound and a beat you can`t help but dance to it.

     H Julie Delpy, Γαλλίδα ηθοποιός, σκηνοθέτιδα και σεναριογράφος, ήταν η παραγωγός του φιλμ "2 Days in Paris"  to 2007 και επίσης επιμελήθηκε το soundtrack του.

   Για αυτή την ταινία τραγούδησε το "LaLaLa", ένα τραγούδι που συνέθεσε μαζί με τον Marc Collin της Γαλλικής μπάντας Nouvelle Vague, των οποίων η δισκογραφία αποτελείται ολοκληρωτικά από διασκευές new wave και punk επιτυχιών, μεταμορφωμένες σε bossa nova ρυθμούς.

Movie of the Week: "The Way", 2010

   In this movie Martin Sheen plays the role of a father whose estranged son dies in an accident in Europe, while walking the "El camino de Santiago", a traditional pilgrimage route of around 800 klm, from France to Spain, through the Pyrenees, so he decides to complete the journey himself, in the memory of his lost son.

   Well, we have to admit that at first we hesitated to watch this movie, as the story seemed kind of boring, but in the end we agreed that we had watched a powerful film and amazing story, without really being able to figure out which element made it so compelling: 

   Was it because of the the father`s decision to complete the son`s ambitious journey, which helps him to learn more about his son and himself? 

   Was it because of the magnifiscent scenery depicted through this touching road movie? 

   Was it because of the characters of the rest of the pilgrims who walk along the same route, coming from different backgrounds and being motivated by their own issues? 

   Or, finally, was it because of the fact that learning about this tradition of pilgrims, walking this route across France and Spain for more than 1.000 years, aroused our imagination?

   Whatever the reason, we kept in mind the key meaning of the film: In the beginnig, while arguing with his father, the son challenges him to take the trip with him, to take a chance, to really live and when the father states that he is happy with the life he has chosen, the son replies:

 "You don’t choose a life, you live one..."

                                                                        

   Σε αυτή την ταινία ο Martin Sheen παίζει το ρόλο ενός πατέρα, του οποίου ο αποξενωμένος γιος πεθαίνει σε ατύχημα στην Ευρώπη, κατά την πορεία του στο "El camino de Santiago", μιας παραδοσιακής διαδρομής προσκυνητών περίπου 800 χλμ από τη Γαλλία στην Ισπανία, μέσω των Πυρηναίων, οπότε αποφασίζει να ολοκληρώσει το ταξίδι ο ίδιος, στην μνήμη του χαμένου του γιου.

   Πρέπει να παραδεχτούμε ότι αρχικά διστάζαμε να δούμε την ταινία, καθώς η ιστορία ακουγόταν λίγο πληκτική, αλλά στο τέλος συμφωνήσαμε ότι είχαμε δει ένα δυνατό φιλμ και μια υπέροχη ιστορία, χωρίς να μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε ποιο στοιχείο την έκανε τόσο καθηλωτική:

   Ήταν εξαιτίας της απόφασης του πατέρα να ολοκληρώσει το φιλόδοξο ταξίδι του γιου, που τον βοηθά να μάθει περισσότερα γι`αυτόν και για τον ίδιο;

   Ήταν εξαιτίας του καταπληκτικού τοπίου, που απεικονίζεται σε αυτό το συγκινητικό road movie;

   Ήταν εξαιτίας των χαρακτήρων των υπόλοιπων προσκυνητών που περπατούν την ίδια διαδρομή προερχόμενοι από διαφορετικά περιβάλλοντα και προσωπικά κίνητρα;

  Ή, τέλος, ήταν εξαιτίας του γεγονότος ότι η πληροφόρησή μας για την παράδοση αυτή των προσκυνητών, που περπατούν αυτή τη διαδρομή κατά μήκος της Γαλλία και της Ισπανίας για πάνω από 1.000 χρόνια, εξιτάρησε τη φαντασία μας;

   Όποια και να ήταν η αιτία, κρατήσαμε το κεντρικό νόημα της ταινίας: στη αρχή της, ενώ διαφωνεί με τον πατέρα του, ο γιος τον προκαλεί να κάνει αυτό το ταξίδι μαζί του, να ρισκάρει, να ζήσει πραγματικά και όταν ο πατέρας δηλώνει ευχαριστημένος με τη ζωή που διάλεξε, ο γιος του απαντά:

"Δεν διαλέγεις τη ζωή, την ζεις..."

"Misery Bear" VI: It`s Football Time!

   No more time for fooling around for this blog`s favourite anti-hero when football starts! Despite his tough luck, when looking for love or just a friend, the world`s loneliest bear was still capable of leaving his misery behind, when time came to support England`s National Football Team in the South African World Cup of 2010. 

   Watch him pack just the necessary items (beer, beer and... beer), listening to the song "Three Lions" that the Lightning Seeds wrote as the most successful official anthem for England`s team & the 1996 Euro Championship and getting ready for some serious action.

   ...or not?

   Τέλος το χαζολόγημα για τον αγαπημένο αντι-ήρωα αυτού του blog, όταν ξεκινά το ποδόσφαιρο! Παρά την σκληρή τύχη του, όταν ψάχνει για τον έρωτα ή έστω για έναν φίλο, το πιο μοναχικό αρκουδάκι του κόσμου είναι ικανό να αφήσει πίσω του τη θλίψη, όταν έρχεται η ώρα να υποστηρίξει την Εθνική Ομάδα Ποδοσφαίρου της Αγγλίας στο Μουντιάλ της Νοτίου Αφρικής το 2010.

   Παρακολουθείστε το να πακετάρει μόνο τα απαραίτητα (μπύρες, μπύρες και ... μπύρες), καθώς ακούει το τραγούδι "Three Lions" που οι Lightning Seeds έγραψαν ως τον πιο πετυχημένο επίσημο ύμνο για την ομάδα της Αγγλίας και την επίσημη διοργάνωση του Ευρωπαϊκού Πρωταθλήματος Ποδοσφαίρου του 1996 και να ετοιμάζεται για σοβαρή δράση.

   ...ή όχι;

Η εντυπωσιακή θέα σε συνδυασμό με την πυκνή βλάστηση αλλά και τις υψηλού επιπέδου παροχές το κατατάσσουν ως έναν από τους κορυφαίους προορισμούς για διακοπές.

"Vehicle" - The Ides Of March

   Since we find ourselves in a kind of retro mood, following the 1969 Grass Roots hit "I`d wait a million years" (click here for the relevant post), we move into next year: 

   In 1970 the monster hit "Vehicle" by funk rock band The Ides of March became the fastest selling single of Warner`s history, reaching 1.000.000 copies (!) and making them the opening act for Jimi Hendriχ, Janis Joplin & Led Zeppelin.

   Jim Peterick, singer, guitarist & songwriter of the band, is also the songwriter of another mega-hit "The eye of the tiger" from Survivor, his next band!

   Μια και βρισκόμαστε σε ρετρό διάθεση, ακολουθώντας την επιτυχία του 1969 των Grass Roots ""I`d wait a million years" (πατήστε εδώ για τη σχετική ανάρτηση), προχωράμε στο επόμενο έτος:

Movie of the Week: "Motorcycle Diaries" (2004)

   Our post about Derringer vintage motorcycles (click here) reminded us of this film as movie of the week. 

    There is not much to be said about this movie, that hasn`t already been said: "Motorcycle Diaries" is the road trip of 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara across Latin America which broadened his horizons and planted the seed of his transformation into the radical rebel and politician, known as "Che". 

    Based on his memoirs and with the role of "Che" played powerfully by Gael Garcia Bernal, this is a great film about a personal journey that had impact on his life and world history...

  Η ανάρτησή μας για τις vintage μοτοσυκλέτες Derringer (πατήστε εδώ) μας θύμισαν αυτό το φιλμ ως ταινία της εβδομάδας. 

   Δεν υπάρχουν πολλά να ειπωθούν για την ταινία αυτή, που δεν έχουν ήδη ειπωθεί: "Τα Ημερολόγια Μοτοσυκλέτας" είναι το ταξίδι του 23χρονου Ernesto Guevara στην Λατινική Αμερική που διεύρυνε τους ορίζοντές του και φύτεψε τον σπόρο της μεταμόρφωσή του στον ριζοσπαστικό επαναστάτη και πολιτικό, που έγινε γνωστός ως "Τσε".

   Βασισμένο στις αναμνήσεις του και με τον ρόλο του "Che" ερμηνευμένο δυναμικά από τον Gael Garcia Bernal, αυτή είναι μια σπουδαία ταινία για ένα προσωπικό ταξίδι που είχε αντίκτυπο στη ζωή του και στην παγκόσμια ιστορία...

Derringer Vintage Motorcycles

    Derringer Cycles is a company that specializes in customised and handmade 1920`s vintage style motorcycles. 

    These elegant mopeds come in a variety of colours and stand out as a stylish means of urban transport which definitely make heads turn, as well as hit the road with their 4-stroke 49cc engine, which give you an acceleration of 35 or 40mph.

                                                                        

   Η Derringer Cycles είναι μια εταιρεία που ειδικεύεται στις κατόπιν παραγγελίας και χειροποίητες σε παλιό στυλ της δεκαετίας του 1920 μοτοσυκλέτες. 

    Αυτά τα κομψά μοτοποδήλατα βγαίνουν σε ποικιλία χρωμάτων και ξεχωρίζουν ως στυλάτα μέσα αστικής μεταφοράς, που σίγουρα κάνουν τα κεφάλια να γυρίζουν στο πέρασμά τους, όπως επίσης σας βγάζουν στο δρόμο με τον 4χρονο κινητήρα των 49 cc που δίνει μια τελική των 55-65 χλμ.
