On the Road: The Design History of a Classic Book Cover

 Αυτό το "pulp" εξώφυλλο προέρχεται από την Βρετανική Pan Books, εκδοτικό οίκο πιο διάσημο για τη σειρά James Bond του Ian Fleming.

 "...The first-ever On the Road cover is, strangely enough, rather austere. First printings now run you anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 depending on their condition..." 

                                         

   Το πρώτο εξώφυλλο του On the Road είναι, παραδόξως, μάλλον αυστηρό. Οι πρώτες εκτυπώσεις κυμαίνονται τώρα από $ 4.000 έως $ 8.000, ανάλογα με την κατάστασή τους. 

Andre Deutsch (U.K.), 1958

   "..."Liquor. Girls. Fun. Jazz." That pretty much sums up what the publisher was trying to sell to England's youth in the country's first edition of the novel..." 

                                         

   "Αλκοόλ. Κορίτσια. Διασκέδαση. Τζαζ." Αυτα λίγο πολύ συνοψίζουν ό, τι ο εκδότης προσπαθεί να πουλήσει στη νεολαία της Αγγλίας στην πρώτη έκδοση του μυθιστορήματος στην χώρα του.

   "...By 1968, On the Road was legendary among hippies, despite the fact that Kerouac didn't like or understand them. Regardless, Signet decided to cater to them with the tagline: "The riotous odyssey of two American drop-outs, by the drop-out who started it at all . . ." 

                                                       

   Μέχρι το 1968 το On the Road είχε γίνει θρυλικό μεταξύ των χίπις, παρά το γεγονός ότι ο Κέρουακ δεν τους συμπαθούσε ή δεν τους καταλαβαίνε. Παρ`όλα αυτά, η Signet αποφάσισε να απευθυνθεί σε αυτούς με το σύνθημα: "Η ταραχώδης οδύσσεια των δύο αμερικανών περιθωριακών, από τον περιθωριακό που  ξεκίνησε όλο αυτό ..."

   Η δεκαετία του `90 είδε μια αναβίωση του ενδιαφέροντος για το On the Road και όλα τα Beat στοιχεία, με αποτέλεσμα αυτό το εξώφυλλο να προβάλει μια φωτογραφία του Jack Kerouac και  του Neal Cassady, που αποτέλεσε την έμπνευση για τον χαρακτήρα του βιβλίου Dean Moriarty .

   "...The centerpiece for this cover is a map Kerouac drew himself in 1947, outlining the cross-country trip that he would immortalize years later by writing On the Road..." 

                                                

   Το κεντρικό στοιχείο αυτού του εξωφύλλου είναι ένας χάρτης που ο ίδιος ο Kerouac σχεδίασε το 1947, περιγράφοντας  το ταξίδι από τη μια άκρη της χώρας στην άλλη, το οποίο θα περνούσε στην αθανασία χρόνια αργότερα με τη συγγραφή του On the Road.
