"CBGB": The Movie (2013)

   Once upon a time, in early `70`s New York, Hilly Kristal was a man with a dream to own a Country, Bluegrass and Blues club (CBGB) but had difficulty booking the bands he liked, so he decided to try different musical styles: the result was the foundation of a club that became the world`s most legendary underground rock`n`roll & punk rock club, making Hilly Kristal the "Godfather of New York`s punk rock scene", the man who gave The  Ramones, Television,  Patti Smith, The Dead Boys, The Fleshtones,The Cramps, The B-52's, Iggy Pop, Blondie, Joan Jett, Talking Heads, the Police & many more the chance to become music legends.

   This year a movie about the Temple of Punk & New Wave is planned to be released, with many fresh faces in the roles of Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Patti Smith, Stiv Bators. The film is highly anticipated and there`s already much controversy and talk whether the performances and Randall Miller`s directing will live up to the expectations.

   In any case, the only thing that is sure is that the soundtrack will definitely be explosive, since the movie "CBGB" will feature more than 40 songs of the period.

   Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό, στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του `70 στη Νέα Υόρκη, ο Hilly Kristal ήταν ένας άνθρωπος με όνειρο να έχει ένα Country, Bluegrass και Blues Club (CBGB), όμως αντιμετώπιζε δυσκολίες να κλείσει τις μπάντες που του άρεσαν κι έτσι αποφάσισε να δοκιμάσει διαφορετικά μουσικά στυλ: το αποτέλεσμα ήταν η ίδρυση ενός club που έγινε το πιο θρυλικό underground rock` n `roll και punk rock club στον κόσμο, καθιστώντας τον Hilly Kristal το "νονό της πανκ ροκ σκηνής" της Νέας Υόρκης, τον άνθρωπο που έδωσε στους Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, The Dead Boys, The Fleshtones, Cramps, The B-52`s, Iggy Pop, Blondie, Joan Jett, Talking Heads, Police και πολλούς αλλους την ευκαιρία να γίνουν μουσικοί θρύλοι.
    Φέτος, μια ταινία για το Ναό του Punk και New Wave έχει προγραμματιστεί να κυκλοφορήσει, με πολλά νέα πρόσωπα στους ρόλους των Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Patti Smith, Stiv Bators. Η ταινία είναι πολυαναμενόμενη και υπάρχει ήδη πολλή διαμάχη και συζήτηση κατά πόσον οι ερμηνείες και η σκηνοθεσία του Randall Miller θα ανταποκριθούν στις προσδοκίες.
    Σε κάθε περίπτωση, το μόνο πράγμα που είναι βέβαιο είναι ότι το soundtrack σίγουρα θα είναι εκρηκτικό, αφού η ταινία "CBGB" θα περιλαμβάνει περισσότερα από 40 τραγούδια της περιόδου.

   "... We like the virtue of architecture which makes possible constructing a house on air, walking on water... An abrupt plot of land overlooking the sea, where what is best is to do nothing. It invites to stay. A piece that respects the land's natural contour is set in it. Above, a shadow, the house itself, looking calmly at the Mediterranean. Under the sun, the swimming-pool brings us closer to the sea, it becomes a quiet cove. In the inflection point, the stairway proposes a evocative path, a garden in the basement... 

   Due to the steepness of the plot and the desire to contain the house in just one level, a three-dimensional structure of reinforced concrete slabs and screens adapting to the plot's topography was chosen, thus minimizing the earthwork. This monolithic, stone-anchored structure generates a horizontal platform from the accessing level, where the house itself is located. The swimming-pool is placed on a lower level, on an already flat area of the site. 

   The concrete structure is insulated from the outside and then covered by a flexible and smooth white lime stucco. The rest of materials, walls, pavements, the gravel on the roof... all maintain the same colour, respecting the traditional architecture of the area, emphasizing it and simultaneously underlining the unity of the house..."

   " ...Μας αρέσει η αρετή της αρχιτεκτονικής που καθιστά δυνατή την κατασκευή ενός σπιτιού στον αέρα, το περπάτημα στο νερό... Ένα απότομο οικόπεδο με θέα τη θάλασσα, όπου το καλύτερο είναι να μην κάνεις τίποτα. Σε προσκαλεί να μείνεις. Ένα οικοδόμημα που σέβεται το φυσικό περίγραμμα του οικοπέδου βρίσκεται σε αυτό. Πάνω, μια σκιά, το ίδιο το σπίτι, κοιτάζει ήρεμα στην Μεσόγειο. Κάτω από τον ήλιο, η πισίνα μας φέρνει πιο κοντά στη θάλασσα, γίνεται ένας ήσυχος όρμος. Στο σημείο καμπής, η σκάλα προτείνει μια υποβλητική διαδρομή, έναν κήπο στο υπόγειο ... 

   Λόγω της κλίσης του οικοπέδου και της επιθυμίας να περιοριστεί το σπίτι σε ένα μόνο επίπεδο, επιλέχτηκε μια τρισδιάστατη κατασκευή από πλάκες οπλισμένου σκυροδέματος προσαρμοσμένες στην τοπογραφία του οικοπέδου, ελαχιστοποιώντας έτσι το σκάψιμο. Αυτή η μονολιθική, αγκυροβολημένη πέτρινη κατασκευή δημιουργεί μια οριζόντια πλατφόρμα από το επίπεδο πρόσβασης, όπου βρίσκεται το σπίτι. Η πισίνα βρίσκεται σε χαμηλότερο επίπεδο, σε μια ήδη επίπεδη περιοχή του οικοπέδου. 

   Η τσιμεντένια κατασκευή είναι μονωμένη εξωτερικά και στη συνέχεια καλύπτεται από ένα απαλό λευκό ασβέστη. Το υπόλοιπο των υλικών, τοίχοι, πεζοδρόμια, το χαλίκι στη στέγη ... όλα διατηρούν το ίδιο χρώμα, σεβόμενα την παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονική της περιοχής, τονίζοντας και ταυτόχρονα υπογραμμίζοντας την ενότητα του σπιτιού..."

Sweethearts: Bespoke Candy & Treats

   In our daily lives we come across many people and we believe that in order to establish good communication and cooperation, courtesy is needed primarily. In a recent search Gus and I did for goodies and treats that we will offer in a call for our baby`s birth, we discovered a wonderful effort, full of inspiration, coming from two young people, Constantine and Nafsica, who are the creators behind the "Sweethearts'' trademark (www.sweethearts.gr).
   Upon contacting them, they responded to our questions immediately and in a truly explanatory spirit with great kindness and for this reason we decided to publicize their work.

                                                                                          

     Στην καθημερινότητα μας ερχόμαστε σε επαφή με πολλούς ανθρώπους και αυτό που θεωρούμε ότι πρέπει να υπάρχει για μια καλή επικοινωνία και συνεργασία είναι πρωτίστως η ευγένεια. Σε πρόσφατη αναζήτηση που κάναμε ο Gus και εγώ για τις λιχουδιές και τα κεράσματα που θα προσφέρουμε σε κάλεσμα για τον ερχομό του μωρού μας, ανακαλύψαμε μια θαυμάσια προσπάθεια, γεμάτη έμπνευση από 2 νέους ανθρώπους, τον Κωνσταντίνο και την Ναυσικά, που είναι οι δημιουργοί πίσω από την επωνυμία ''Sweethearts''(www.sweethearts.gr).

  Στην επαφή που είχαμε ανταποκρίθηκαν άμεσα και επεξηγηματικά στα ερωτήματα μας, με εξαιρετική ευγένεια, και γι αυτόν τον λόγο αποφασίσαμε να σας κάνουμε γνωστή τη δουλειά τους.

Movie Of The Week: "Blow-Up" (1966)

    "Blow-Up" is the 1966 Michelangelo Antonioni`s cult film that won the 1967 Palme d'Or Award in Cannes. This mod masterpiece is a colourful depiction of the "swinging London" era of the `60s, filled with images of mini skirts, go-go clubs, cool `60`s fashion and overwhelming sensuality and sexuality.  The film was Antonioni`s huge success and is considered as one of the most influential movies of the 20th century.

   The main character is a glamorous photographer, who feels bored in his narcissistic life of fashion and easy sex but  his world is shattered when he notices that he may have accidentally photographed a murder.

    Herbie Hancock contributed the jazzy score, capturing the vibe of "swinging London" with grooves that create bluesy moods on the slow pieces and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks, while the Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck, contribute the rock`n`roll moment and actually appear on film.

                                                                                           

   To "Blow-Up" είναι η cult ταινία του Μικελάντζελο Αντονιόνι του 1966, που κέρδισε το βραβείο του "Χρυσού Φοίνικα" το 1967 στις Κάννες. Αυτό το mod αριστούργημα είναι μια γλαφυρή απεικόνιση της εποχής του "Swinging London" των `60s, γεμάτη με εικόνες από μίνι φούστες, go-go clubs, cool μόδας των `60`s και ακαταμάχητο αισθησιασμό και σεξουαλικότητα. Η ταινία ήταν μια τεράστια επιτυχία του Αντονιόνι και θεωρείται μια από τις πλέον επιδραστικές ταινίες του 20ου αιώνα.

    Ο κύριος χαρακτήρας είναι ένα λαμπερός φωτογράφος, ο οποίος αισθάνεται να βαριέται στη ναρκισσιστική του ζωή της μόδας και του εύκολου σεξ, αλλά ο κόσμος του γκρεμίζεται όταν αντιλαμβάνεται ότι μπορεί να έχει φωτογραφήσει κατά λάθος μια δολοφονία.

     Ο Herbie Hancock συνεισέφερε την τζαζ μουσική του soundtrack, πιάνοντας την ατμόσφαιρα του "swinging London" με μουσικές που δημιουργούν μελαγχολική διάθεση στα αργά κομμάτια και funky διάθεση στα πιο ρυθμικά, ενώ οι Yardbirds, με τον Jimmy Page και τον Jeff Beck,  συνεισφέρουν την rock`n`roll στιγμή και εμφανίζονται και πραγματικά στην ταινία.

F.C. Gundlach: The Master Of Modern Fashion Photography

   ...F.C. Gundlach ranks as the most significant fashion photographer of Germany's post-war years. His name has gone down in the pages of fashion history and even today he still wields great influence on photography in Germany – as an initiator of exhibitions, a collector and as a patron...

   ...If the 50s were the decade of the lady of elegance, of sophisticated clothes and haute couture, then the 60s heralded in the desire for political change, emancipation and the age of the prêt-à-porter collection ... Alongside the photo-article approach he also became much more inspired by the fine arts – op-art and pop-art being two genres that he, as a collector of art, focused on...."

   F.C.
