Coffee Time

   I guess time came to make the switch from freffos, capucccino or esspresso, Frappé or any kind of iced coffee we `ve enjoyed so far since springtime to a cup of steaming hot coffee...

                                                                          

   Μάλλον ήρθε ο καιρός για να κάνουμε την αλλαγή από τα freffo, capucccino ή esspresso, τον φραπέ και κάθε άλλο τύπο παγωμένου καφέ που απολαμβάναμε από την άνοιξη ως τώρα, σε μια κούπα αχνιστού ζεστού καφέ...

Photo Exhibition At Home

  After going to our friend`s Michalis M. birthday party (Michalis is a dear friend gifted with an indisputable talent in photography) I wondered which is the best way to exhibit photographs at home, when one is lucky enough to possess numerous artworks.

   I ended up thinking that a simple plaster board with fixed supports on the floor and on the ceiling, as pictured in the photo, is a great solution for artworks to be exhibited deservingly.

                                                     

  Mε αφορμή την πρόσφατη επίσκεψή μας στο γενέθλιο πάρτυ του φίλου μας Μιχ. Μ. - του οποίου το φωτογραφικό ταλέντο είναι αναμφισβήτητο- αναρωτήθηκα όταν κάποιος έχει την τύχη να κατέχει  πληθώρα φωτογραφικών έργων ποιός είναι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να τα εκθέσει στον προσωπικό του χώρο.

  Κατέληξα ότι μια απλή γύψινη κατασκευή με στηρίγματα στο πάτωμα και στην οροφή, όπως απεικονίζεται στην φωτογραφία, είναι μια εξαιρετική λύση, ώστε όλα τα έργα να έχουν τη θέση τους που τους αξίζει.

Movie of the Week: "The Talented Mr Ripley" (1999)

   Anthony Minghella`s "The Talented Mr. Ripley" is his 1999  film adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith 1955 novel of the same name, with an all-star cast of actors, like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman etc. The film tells the intriguing story of a sociopath (Matt Damon), whose talents are forgery, lying and impersonations, who is assigned the task of tracking down a wealthy shipbuilder`s son (Jude Law) in Italy and persuading him to return to the States, only to find himself jealous of the son`s carefree and luxurious life and tempted to assume his identity... 

   One of the elements that made this movie so enjoyable, besides Minghella`s skillful direction, the great performances and the story itself, is the beautiful scenery used as the backdrop of the film, the picturesque Italian resort of Mongibello, where Jude Law lives an elegant life, "la dolce vita", with his rich and fashionable friends and girlfriend, only caring about glamorous parties, riding vespas and enjoying the sun and the sea.

  The truth is that the amazing "Mongibello" is a completely fictitious Italian town, as, in reality, it `s the combination of different locations:  the island of Ischia, about 30 km from Naples, with its striking landmark, the "Castello Aragonese", a 12th century castle built on a rock rising from the sea off the coastal town of Ischia Ponte and overlooking the seafront piazza, "Bagno Antonio", the private beach club where Matt Damon first meets Lude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow and the neighbouring island of Procida with the beautiful fishing village of Corricella and the colourful houses, where Jude Law usually rides his scooter through Via San Rocco, dominated by the domed Church of Our Lady of Grace and Piazza dei Martiri as the town square.

   Α timeless Italian landscape which, filtered through the director`s imagination, helped the story to unravel in the most convincing way...

                                                                           

    Η ταινία του Anthony Minghella "Ο Ταλαντούχος Κύριος Ρίπλεϊ" του 1999 είναι μια μεταφορά στην μεγάλη οθόνη του ομώνυμου μυθιστορήματος της Patricia Highsmith του έτους 1955 με ένα επιτελείο κινηματογραφικών αστέρων όπως οι Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman κ.α. Το φιλμ αφηγείται την ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία ενός διαταραγμένου νέου (Matt Damon), με ταλέντο στην πλαστογραφία, το ψέμα και τις μιμήσεις, που του ανατίθεται η αποστολή της ανεύρεσης στην Ιταλία του γιου (Jude Law) ενός πλούσιου εφοπλιστή, ώστε να τον πείσει να επιστρέψει στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, για να ανακαλύψει στην πορεία πόσο ζηλεύει την ανέμελη και πολυτελή ζωή του και να μπει στον πειρασμό να πάρει τη θέση του...

   Ένα από τα στοιχεία που έκαναν την ταινία τόσο απολαυστική, εκτός από την σκηνοθετική δεξιοτεχνία του Minghella, τις σπουδαίες ερμηνείες, αλλά και την ίδια την ιστορία, είναι είναι και το πανέμορφο τοπίο που χρησιμοποιείται ως σκηνικό της, το γραφικό Ιταλικό θέρετρο του Mongibello, όπου ο Jude Law ζει μια πολυτελή ζωή, μια "dolce vita", με τους πλούσιους κομψούς φίλους του και την σύντροφό του, με μόνα ενδιαφέροντα τα λαμπερά πάρτυ, τις βόλτες με βέσπες και την απόλαυση του ήλιου και της θάλασσας.

   Η αλήθεια είναι ότι το εκπληκτικό "Mongibello" είναι μια πλήρως επινοημένη Ιταλική πόλη, καθώς στην πραγματικότητα είναι ένας συνδυασμός από διαφορετικές τοποθεσίες: το νησί της Ischia, περίπου 30 χλμ από τη Νάπολη, με το εντυπωσιακό αξιοθέατο, το "Castello Aragonese", ένα κάστρο του 12ου αιώνα χτισμένο πάνω σε ένα βράχο που ξεπροβάλει από τη θάλλασα έξω από την παραθαλάσσια πόλη της Ischia Ponte, με θέα στην παραλιακή πλατεία, το "Bagno Antonio", το ιδιωτικό παραλιακό club όπου ο Matt Damon πρωτοσυναντά τους Jude Law και Gwyneth Paltrow και το γειτονικό νησί της Procida με το πανέμορφο ψαροχώρι της Corricella και τα πολύχρωμα σπίτια, εκεί όπου ο Jude Law συνηθίζει να κάνει βόλτες με τη βέσπα του στην Via San Roccο και όπου δεσπόζει η θολωτή εκκλησία της Παναγίας με την Piazza dei Martiri ως το κέντρο της πόλης.

   Το διαχρονικό Ιταλικό τοπίο, το οποίο, φιλτραρισμένο μέσα από την φαντασία του σκηνοθέτη, βοήθησε την ιστορία να ξετυλιχθεί ομάλά με τον πιο πειστικό τρόπο...

The King Of Cool: A VW "Camper" Van Side Car

   This amazing custom-made 2007 model is definitely the epitome of cool design:  the owner of this 1961 Lambretta scooter spent serious time and money to transform it into a side car replica of the legendary VW "Camper" van, making all the necessary modifications in his back garden, so that his 11-year-old son Kaine can sit in while they drive around the country, in the most eccentric way.

   The only problem he encountered is that their journeys take ages, since they are constantly stopped by people for photos, as the proud owner stated in the Daily Mail...

                                                                     

    Αυτό το εκπληκτικό ανακατασκευασμένο μοντέλο του 2007 είναι σίγουρα η επιτομή του "cool": o ιδιοκτήτης αυτής της βέσπας μάρκας Lambretta του 1961 ξόδεψε αρκετό χρόνο και χρήμα για να  μεταμορφώσει αυτή τη μοτοσυκλέτα με καλάθι σε πιστό αντίγραφο του θρυλικού μοντέλου "Camper" της VW (βανάκι), κάνοντας όλες τις απαραίτητες τροποποιήσεις στην πίσω αυλή του σπιτιού του, ώστε ο 11χρονος γιoς του να μπορεί να τον συνοδεύει στα ταξίδια τους στην εξοχή, με τον πιο εκκεντρικό τρόπο.

   Το μόνο πρόβλημα που αντιμετώπισε είναι ότι τα ταξίδια τους παίρνουν πάρα πολύ ώρα, καθώς τους σταματουν συνεχώς στο δρόμο για φωτογραφίες, όπως δήλωσε ο περήφανος ιδιοκτήτης στην εφημερίδα Daily Mail...

"I Wanna Be Adored" - The Raveonettes (Stone Roses cover)

  October 1st has been designated the International Day of Older Persons, a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.

   In 2010 the Danish indie rock duo The Raveonettes covered the Stone Roses’ classic hit "I Wanna  Be Adored" for Dr. Martens’ 50th anniversary. They also made a great video for their version of the song, starring Barbara Singer as a rock`n`roll granny inspired by the 1971 cult classic comedy "Harold and Maude", where the self-destructive and obsessed with death  teenager Harold meets the 80-year-old carefree and free-spirited anarchist Maude and falls in love with her. 

   The chemistry between this unusual couple, the young person who is full of life and obsessed with death and the elderly person who is nearing death but is obsessed with life, definitely teaches an important  life lesson.

   Η 1η Οκτωβρίου έχει θεσπιστεί ως η Παγκόσμια Μέρα Τρίτης Ηλικίας, η μέρα για να εκτιμηθεί η προσφορά των ηλικιωμένων ατόμων στην κοινωνία.

   Tο 2010 oι Raveonettes, ένα indie rock ντουέτο από τη Δανία διασκεύασαν την κλασσική επιτυχία "I Wanna  Be Adored" για τη 50η επέτειο της Dr. Martens. Γύρισαν επίσης ένα σπουδαίο βίντεο για την δική τους εκδοχή του τραγουδιού, με πρωταγωνίστρια την Barbara Singer ως μια  rock`n`roll γιαγιά, εμπνευσμένη από την κλασσική cult κωμωδία του 1971 με τίτλο "Harold and Maude", στην οποία ο αυτοκαταστροφικός νεαρός Harold, με εμμονές για τον θάνατο συναντά την ανέμελη και αντισυμβατική 80χρονη με αναρχικό πνεύμα Maude και την ερωτεύεται. Η χημεία αυτού του περίεργου ζευγαριού, του νεαρού γεμάτου ζωή που έχει εμμονή με τον θάνατο και της ηλικιωμένης που κοντεύει στον θάνατο, αλλά έχει εμμονή με την ζωή, σίγουρα διδάσκει ένα σπουδαίο μάθημα ζωής.

    This creative design belongs to Marie Burgos Design creative team, with projects in Tribeca, Manhattan, Chelsea, Long Island,  Soho etc. The designer specializes in high aesthetic apartments, highlighting their advantages.

   This particular penthouse has floor-to-ceiling glass walls, offering a stunning view of Manhattan and was  designed in a way that it brings out a welcoming, luxurious sense of harmony

                                                                                

  Η σχεδιαστική δημιουργία ανήκει στην ομάδα της Marie Burgos Design με έργα στο Manhattan Tribeca, Chelsea, Long Island και Soho. Ειδικεύεται στα υψηλής αισθητικής διαμερίσματα, αναδεικνύοντας εύστοχα τα δυνατά τους σημεία. 

   Το συγκεκριμένο ρετιρέ έχει από το δάπεδο εως και την οροφή γυάλινους τοίχους με εξαιρετική θέα στο Manhattan και σχεδιάστηκε με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να έχει μια φιλόξενη, πολυτελή αίσθηση αρμονίας.

"Citrus Spray" by Lekue: Turning A Fruit Into A Spray Device

  I`m always interested in new design objects and I often discover imaginative designers whose creations are pleasant surprises. Take Frankfurt, for example, where this year, during "Tendence 2012" exhibition, Joan Rojeski Disseny και Alberto Arza showed a food utensil, called "Citrus Spray",.designed for Spanish Lekue.
   Just by cutting off the top of a lemon or an orange and by screwing this object downwards into the fruit, you can get a practical lemon spay device, gently squeezing every time you want to spray the juice, directly from the fruit!
                                                                                                                     

    Παρακολουθώ πάντα με μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον τα νέα αντικείμενα design και κάθε φορά ανακαλύπτω ότι υπάρχουν ευφάνταστοι δημιουργοί, τα σχέδια των οποίων εκπλήσσουν ευχάριστα. Για παράδειγμα, στη Φρανκφούρτη φέτος στο show "Τendence 2012" παρουσιάστηκε από τους Joan Rojeski Disseny και Alberto Arza για την Ισπανική εταιρία Lekue  το οικιακό εργαλείο "Citrus Spray".

   Απλά κόβοντας την μια άκρη από ένα λεμόνι ή πορτοκάλι και τοποθετώντας  τη συσκευή περιστροφικά  μέσα σε αυτό, αποκτά κανείς ένα πρακτικό spray λεμονιού, πιέζοντας ελαφρά κάθε φορά που θέλει να"ψεκάσει" με τον χυμό, απευθείας από το φρούτο!

Benedict Cumberbatch: Britain's Next Big Thing

   I have to admit that it`s difficult - for the time being - to remember the super talented British actor Benedict Cumberbatch`s surname but the fact is that his name is literally everywhere: due to his roles in the exceptional BBC tv programmes "Parade`s End" and "Sherlock", with an eagerly anticipated 3rd season in 2013,  the internet rumors that he will play the villain in the next James Bond movie and the scheduled Hollywood productions of Star Trek and "The Hobbit".

   Coming from an artistic family of important tv and theatrical actors as parents, he is at the moment one of the hottest upcoming actors of the British theater scene, he has won the prestigious theatrical Olivier award and some of his strongest suits are his ability to easily transform, playing roles in period dramas as well as modern roles, and his strong masculine and imposing voice quality.

                                                                                 

   Ομολογώ ότι είναι δύσκολο -προς το παρόν- να συγκρατήσουμε το επώνυμο του υπερταλαντούχου 36χρονου Βρετανού ηθοποιού Benedict Cumberbatch, όμως αυτή την εποχή το όνομά του βρίσκεται κυριολεκτικά παντού: με τους ρόλους του στις εξαιρετικές τηλεοπτικές παραγωγές του BBC "Parade`s End" και "Sherlock",  με μια 3η σαιζόν την οποία αναμένουμε με μεγάλη ανυπομονησία για το 2013, με τις διαδικτυακές φήμες ότι στο επόμενο James Bond θα έχει το ρόλο του ''κακού'', αλλά και με τις σχεδιαζόμενες χολιγουντιανές παραγωγές των Star Trek και The Hobbit.

  Προερχόμενος από καλλιτεχνική οικογένεια με γονείς γνωστούς πρωταγωνιστές τηλεοπτικών και θεατρικών έργων, αυτή τη στιγμή συγκαταλέγεται στα ανερχόμενα ονόματα του αγγλικού θεάτρου, έχει ήδη βραβευθεί με το κορυφαίου θεατρικού κύρους βραβείο Olivier και διαθέτει στα συν του την ευκολία να μεταμορφώνεται με μεγάλη φυσικότητα, ερμηνεύοντας τόσο ρόλους εποχής, όσο και  σύγχρονους, αλλά και μια ιδιαίτερα αρρενωπή και επιβλητική χροιά φωνής.

The Lion's Head in Cape Town, South Africa

   Lion's Head is a mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, with a lion`s-head-shaped top at 669 metres, which offers spectacular views of the city and the coastline, making it a popular spot for hiking and photography, an ideal launching point for paragliding and -judging from the photo above- it definitely gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "I`ll go for a walk to clear my head and get my thoughts together"...

                                                                   

   Το Lion's Head είναι ένα βουνό στο Cape Town της Νοτίου Αφρικής, με κορυφή σε σχήμα κεφαλής λιονταριού σε ύψος 669 μ., που προσφέρει εντυπωσιακή θέα της πόλης και της ακτογραμμής, μετατρέποντάς το σε έναν δημοφιλή τόπο για περιπάτους και φωτογραφίες,  ένα ιδανικό σημείο εκκίνησης για ελεύθερη πτήση με αλεξίπτωτο πλαγιάς και -κρίνοντας από την παραπάνω φωτογραφία- σίγουρα δίνει ένα τελείως νέο νόημα στη φράση "θα πάω μια βόλτα να καθαρίσω το μυαλό μου και να βάλω τις σκέψεις μου σε τάξη"...

All in my mind (IX): It`s A...live

   There’s several things that transform a live recording into a legendary moment in time. In the words of Tim Chester, of NME Magazine:  
   "... setlist, sound quality, on-stage banter, crowd reaction, and a palpable sense of time and place. The best live albums comprise most or all of these, and transport you directly to the front of the crowd by the opening few moments. They give you a real sense of being there, from the intros ... to the crowd noises ... and the songs themselves. They’re moments in time, frozen for ever, enjoyed by a lucky few live but appreciated by millions ever after..."

    The 9th collection of this blog`s music column "All in my mind", entitled "It`s A...live!" is a selection of 21 carefully chosen live recordings, some globally acclaimed and some personal best.

  I have to point out that "... in this blog`s music column a fictional collection is offered, with its cover, fully conceived by me, not for downloading but only for listening (and that`s why it`s entitled "All in my mind"!!!), in the form of a playlist, through the Grooveshark player.

  Υπάρχουν πολλά στοιχεία που μεταμορφώνουν μια ζωντανή ηχογράφηση σε μια θρυλική στιγμή μέσα στο χρόνο. Όπως είπε σχετικά και ο Tim Chester, του περιοδικού ΝΜΕ:  
   "...η λίστα των τραγουδιών, η ποιότητα του ήχου, η συμπεριφορά επί σκηνής, οι αντιδράσεις του κοινού και η χειροπιαστή αίσθηση του χρόνου και του τόπου. Οι σπουδαιότερες ζωντανές ηχογραφήσεις περιλαμβάνουν τα περισσότερα από τα παραπάνω και σε μεταφέρουν απευθείας στο μπροστινό μέρος του κοινού από τις πρώτες στιγμές.    Απόψε, 3η μέρα του 35ου Φεστιβάλ Ελληνικών Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Δράμας, προβάλλεται στο Διαγωνιστικό Τμήμα η ταινία του Κωνσταντίνου Σαμαρά "Τα Ήσυχα Βράδια", που αργότερα, στις 28 του μήνα, θα προβληθεί και στο 18ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου της Αθήνας "Νύχτες Πρεμιέρας". O Κωνσταντίνος Σαμαράς ξεκίνησε σπούδαζοντας νομικά για να καταλήξει  κριτικός κινηματογράφου και σκηνοθέτης.

   Λίγα λόγια για την ταινία, αντιγράφοντας από το www.aiff.gr:

   "...Το ρολόι δείχνει μεσάνυχτα. Το πικάπ αρχίζει να παίζει, το τηλέφωνο να χτυπάει και τα κυάλια να κοιτάζουν. Καταραμένοι εραστές, ρομαντικοί ποιητές και αγνοί ηδονοβλεψίες ζωντανεύουν κάθε βράδυ σε ένα αθηναϊκό δώμα, καθώς ζωή και τέχνη γίνονται ένα σε αυτό το κινηματογραφικό mise-en-abyme..."

   Καλή επιτυχία στη νέα απόπειρα του Κωνσταντίνου Σαμαρά.
