Ian Curtis was the talented singer and frontman of Joy Division, probably the world`s most influential post-punk band. Ian`s haunting and distinctive vocals, the band`s melancholic, dark sound, as well as their emotional, pessimistic and occasionally nihilistic lyrics were elements that made them leaders of the post-punk/new wave scene of the late `70s and pioneers of the music genre, later defined as "goth-rock", with obvious influences on bands, such as The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus. Ian Curtis struggled with epilepsy and depression, resulting to his tragic end, committing suicide by hanging at the age of 23, but his legacy was enough to turn him into a cult figure and a true legend in the history of music.
...But that`s what the rest of the world knows or thinks about him. His daughter Natalie Curtis, photographer, who never really got to know him, since he died when she was just one, thinks of him plainly as her dad and stated what seems to be so obvious:
"...I don’t really listen to Joy Division very much,"
she says. "I would if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s my dad singing.
Who wants to listen to their dad singing? It’s like watching your dad
dance. It’s just dead embarrassing. Your dad’s never cool, is he?..."
Ο Ian Curtis ήταν ο ταλαντούχος τραγουδιστής και ηγέτης των Joy Division, ίσως της πιο επιδραστικής post-punk μπάντας παγκοσμίως. Τα χαρακτηριστικά φωνητικά του Ian που σε στοιχειώνουν, ο μελαγχολικός, σκοτεινός ήχος της μπάντας, καθώς και οι συναισθηματικοί, πεσιμιστικοί και περιστασιακά μηδενιστικοί στίχοι τους ήταν τα στοιχεία που τους έκαναν ηγέτες της post-punk/new wave σκηνής στα τέλη της δεκαετίας '70 και πρωτοπόρους του μουσικού είδους που αργότερα προσδιορίστηκε ως "goth-rock", με προφανείς επιρροές σε συγκροτήματα όπως οι Cure, οι Siouxsie and the Banshees και οι Bauhaus. Ο Ian Curtis πάλεψε με την επιληψία και την κατάθλιψη, με αποτέλεσμα το τραγικό του τέλος, την αυτοκτονία του με απαγχονισμό στην ηλικία των 23, αλλά η κληρονομιά του ήταν αρκετή για να τον μετατρέψει σε μια cult φιγούρα και ένα πραγματικό θρύλο στην ιστορία της μουσικής.
... Αλλά αυτό είναι ό, τι ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος γνωρίζει ή σκέφτεται γι 'αυτόν. Η κόρη του Natalie Curtis, φωτογράφος, η οποία ποτέ δεν πρόλαβε να τον γνωρίσει, καθώς πέθανε όταν η ίδια ήταν μόλις ενός έτους, τον σκέφτεται απλά σαν τον πατέρα της και δήλωσε κάτι που φαίνεται να είναι τόσο προφανές:
"...Δεν ακούω πολύ τους Joy Division", λέει. "Θα το ήθελα, αν δεν υπήρχε το γεγονός ότι τραγουδάει ο μπαμπάς μου. Ποιος θέλει να ακούσει το μπαμπά του να τραγουδάει; Είναι σαν να παρακολουθείς τον μπαμπά σου να χορεύει. Είναι απλά εντελώς ενοχλητικό. Ο μπαμπάς σου δεν είναι ποτέ cool, έτσι δεν είναι;..."
