Round Up The Usual Suspects: Movie of the Week: "The Talented Mr Ripley" (1999)

Anthony Minghella`s "The Talented Mr. Ripley" is his 1999 film adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith 1955 novel of the same name, with an all-star cast of actors, like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman etc. The film tells the intriguing story of a sociopath (Matt Damon), whose talents are forgery, lying and impersonations, who is assigned the task of tracking down a wealthy shipbuilder`s son (Jude Law) in Italy and persuading him to return to the States, only to find himself jealous of the son`s carefree and luxurious life and tempted to assume his identity...

One of the elements that made this movie so enjoyable, besides Minghella`s skillful direction, the great performances and the story itself, is the beautiful scenery used as the backdrop of the film, the picturesque Italian resort of Mongibello, where Jude Law lives an elegant life, "la dolce vita", with his rich and fashionable friends and girlfriend, only caring about glamorous parties, riding vespas and enjoying the sun and the sea.

The truth is that the amazing "Mongibello" is a completely fictitious Italian town, as, in reality, it `s the combination of different locations: the island of Ischia, about 30 km from Naples, with its striking landmark, the "Castello Aragonese", a 12th century castle built on a rock rising from the sea off the coastal town of Ischia Ponte and overlooking the seafront piazza, "Bagno Antonio", the private beach club where Matt Damon first meets Lude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow and the neighbouring island of Procida with the beautiful fishing village of Corricella and the colourful houses, where Jude Law usually rides his scooter through Via San Rocco, dominated by the domed Church of Our Lady of Grace and Piazza dei Martiri as the town square.

Το φιλμ αφηγείται την ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία ενός διαταραγμένου νέου (Matt Damon), με ταλέντο στην πλαστογραφία, το ψέμα και τις μιμήσεις, που του ανατίθεται η αποστολή της ανεύρεσης στην Ιταλία του γιου (Jude Law) ενός πλούσιου εφοπλιστή, ώστε να τον πείσει να επιστρέψει στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, για να ανακαλύψει στην πορεία πόσο ζηλεύει την ανέμελη και πολυτελή ζωή του και να μπει στον πειρασμό να πάρει τη θέση του...

Ένα από τα στοιχεία που έκαναν την ταινία τόσο απολαυστική, εκτός από την σκηνοθετική δεξιοτεχνία του Minghella, τις σπουδαίες ερμηνείες, αλλά και την ίδια την ιστορία, είναι είναι και το πανέμορφο τοπίο που χρησιμοποιείται ως σκηνικό της, το γραφικό Ιταλικό θέρετρο του Mongibello, όπου ο Jude Law ζει μια πολυτελή ζωή, μια "dolce vita", με τους πλούσιους κομψούς φίλους του και την σύντροφό του, με μόνα ενδιαφέροντα τα λαμπερά πάρτυ, τις βόλτες με βέσπες και την απόλαυση του ήλιου και της θάλασσας.

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι το εκπληκτικό "Mongibello" είναι μια πλήρως επινοημένη Ιταλική πόλη, καθώς στην πραγματικότητα είναι ένας συνδυασμός από διαφορετικές τοποθεσίες: το νησί της Ischia, περίπου 30 χλμ από τη Νάπολη, με το εντυπωσιακό αξιοθέατο, το "Castello Aragonese", ένα κάστρο του 12ου αιώνα χτισμένο πάνω σε ένα βράχο που ξεπροβάλει από τη θάλλασα έξω από την παραθαλάσσια πόλη της Ischia Ponte, με θέα στην παραλιακή πλατεία, το "Bagno Antonio", το ιδιωτικό παραλιακό club όπου ο Matt Damon πρωτοσυναντά τους Jude Law και Gwyneth Paltrow και το γειτονικό νησί της Procida με το πανέμορφο ψαροχώρι της Corricella και τα πολύχρωμα σπίτια, εκεί όπου ο Jude Law συνηθίζει να κάνει βόλτες με τη βέσπα του στην Via San Roccο και όπου δεσπόζει η θολωτή εκκλησία της Παναγίας με την Piazza dei Martiri ως το κέντρο της πόλης.
