When the Kaufmanns, 10 years after their collaboration with Frank Loyd Wright, the greatest American architect of the 20th century who designed Fallingwater in Pittsburgh for them, decided to build a summer house in Palm Springs in California, they did not commission him, as many would expect, but Richard Neutra, a decision that made Wright angry, since he didn't think much of Neutra.
Although Richard Neutra had worked in the past with Frank Loyd Wright, he managed to avoid any influences, followed a disign guideline radically differentiated and his wish was to focus on the contrast between an urban creation in the moon landscape of the desert.
The result was Kaufmann Desert House (1946): a minimal and balanced space with the living room and the dining room as the center of the family activity and the rest of the rooms branching out to all directions, like a pinwheel, as it has been described. The whole residence is built on level ground with many glass sliding doors. The swimming pool is the iconic aspect of the house and beloved theme of many photographers, Slim Aarons, the celebrity photographer, among them, who photographed friends of the Kaufmann family in events around it.
In the following years Kaufmann House had many different owners and finally was restored in a way that points out all the features of the original modern architectural design and today it is considered as one of the most important examples of modern architecture in a worldwide scale.

Η πισίνα αποτελεί το εμβληματικό σημείο του σπιτιού και αγαπημένο φωτογραφικό θέμα πολλών, ανάμεσα στους οποίους και ο Slim Aarons, ο φωτογράφος των διάσημων, που αποτύπωσε με την κάμερα του φίλους της οικογένειας Kaufmann σε εκδηλώσεις γύρω από αυτή.
Στα επόμενα χρόνια το Kaufmann Ηouse άλλαξε ιδιοκτήτες, ενώ τελικά ανακαινίστηκε με τρόπο που τονίζει όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά της αρχικού μοντέρνου αρχιτεκτονικού σχεδιασμού και σήμερα πλέον το Desert House των Kaufmann θεωρείται ένα τα σημαντικότερα δείγματα μοντέρνας αρχιτεκτονικής παγκοσμίως.
