Saint-Brieuc, 1972: The Story Of Two Friends On Opposite Sides

The heartbreaking moment when the two friends met on opposite sides during a strike

    Post-war Brittany, France: two boys, Guy Burniaux and Jean-Yvon Antignac, grow up together as inseparable friends and classmates, going to the same parties and flirting with the same girls but as it often happens in real life, somewhere along the way they drifted apart.

    Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, France, April 6th, 1972: 25-year-old Guy Burniaux, a metalworker now at the local French Joint factory and his colleagues are on strike, demanding a balance in wages. Tension is built up, causing uprise. The government sends the CRS (French riot control forces) to liberate the occupied factory and as they charge, Guy Burniaux recognizes his childhood friend Jean-Yvon Antignac among the policemen. In the spur of the moment and with nerves on the edge, Guy attacks him...

    Jacques Gourmelen, photographer, was covering local news for the newspaper "Ouest-France":

"...“I took the photo on instinct. Burniaux had recognized his old friend and classmate,” said the photographer to his colleague Véronique Constance, on the 40th anniversary of this legendary strike. “I saw him go toward his friend and grab him by the collar. He wept with rage and told him, ‘Go ahead and hit me while you’re at it!’ The other one didn’t move a muscle..."

     This intense snapshot was all over the news and national press media and turned Guy into a symbol of the working class hero`s fight against oppression. The truth was that the story was blown way out of proportion, since in real life and after the events of the strike, Guy and Jean remained good friends and started meeting regurarly again. As it often happens, things are much more simple in real life and Guy Burniaux himself admitted that:

"...I had no rancor against him. Nor did I have a political statement to say to his face. That wasn't my style. I was in this as a worker. I was far less politicized that some of my friends..."

        Ο Jacques Gourmelen, φωτογράφος, κάλυπτε τις τοπικές ειδήσεις για την εφημερίδα "Ouest France":
        "..."Τράβηξα τη φωτογραφία ενστικτωδώς. Ο Burniaux είχε αναγνωρίσει τον παλιό του φίλο και συμμαθητή", είπε ο φωτογράφος στη συνάδελφό του Véronique Constance για την 40η επέτειο της θρυλικής αυτής απεργίας. "Τον είδα να προχωρά προς τον φίλο του και να τον αρπάζει από το γιακά. Έκλαψε με οργή ​​και του είπε "Εμπρός, χτύπα με, αφού αυτό κάνεις!" Ο άλλος ούτε που κουνήθηκε... "
      Αυτό το έντονο στιγμιότυπο εμφανίστηκε σε όλες τις ειδήσεις ​​και στα εθνικά ΜΜΕ και μετέτρεψε τον Guy σε ένα σύμβολο του αγώνα του ήρωα της εργατικής τάξης ενάντια στην καταπίεση. Η αλήθεια ήταν ότι η ιστορία είχε διογκωθεί, αφού στην πραγματική ζωή και μετά τα γεγονότα της απεργίας, ο Guy και ο Jean παρέμειναν καλοί φίλοι και άρχισαν να συναντιούνται ανελλιπώς και πάλι. Όπως συμβαίνει συχνά, τα πράγματα είναι πολύ πιο απλά στην πραγματική ζωή και ο ίδιος ο Guy Burniaux παραδέχθηκε ότι:
        "... Δεν είχα καμία μνησικακία εναντίον του. Ούτε είχα καμιά πολιτική δήλωση να του πω κατα πρόσωπο. Δεν ήταν αυτό το στυλ μου. Ήμουν σε όλο αυτό ως απλός εργάτης. Ήμουν πολύ λιγότερο πολιτικοποιημένος από ορισμένους από τους φίλους μου..."

"Villa Kogelhof" In The Netherlands

By using several techniques, the villa will have a comfortable climate all seasons, whilst being extremely energy efficient[...]consisting of two square stacked volumes: one underground and one floating above ground...
    ...The current owner bought the site, once farmland, seven years ago. It is a protected habitat for animals and plants and a major tourist draw in the area, open to the public. Permission to build a house on the land was given only on condition that it was returned to its pre-agricultural state. The planting of some 71,000 six-year-old trees hint at the future of the estate as ‘a villa in the woods’ ..."
